Yes usually you would want to deploy an update during the least busy time. I've had my teams do deployments over the weekend in the past because sales are slowest for us then. It depends on the nature of the update and what kind of coverage you have. I'm sure FD will have devs and admins working over the weekend to monitor and respond to issues.

I've also had an extensive number of roles in very different business sectors, and Friday evening would be typical. This allows user verification over the weekend, with a significant rollback window.
For a big release you target bank holidays if you can.
With point of sale systems you do a phased rollout, and for these systems you may avoid, early on, weekends. You would certainly avoid Christmas.
Taking it that when you say "business" you do not mean the games industry then?
Surely you can understand why normal technical updates would be fine over a weekend (especially a bank holiday), yet gaming industry is a different fish. Your off peak hours would be peak hours for gamers.
Again very poorly thought out idea - only time I have ever known a game release a patch update on a Friday was due to a serious hotfix.
Getting the new launcher to install is fun. I had to download then run as administrator. I wonder how many people that will catch out.
Kept saying installed but when you clicked on the launcher it said out of date. Lots of people reporting this. Windows 8.1 BTW for me.

I think the reason for the Friday update is the "power-cycle".
All changes in the Elite universe happen during the server maintenance at Thursday morning: Jacque's is moving, stations are built. The power's cycle will most likely end at this date as well and the new balance of powers will be evaluated.
In order to grant the playerbase as much of the current cycle as possible, it is necessary to update close to Thursday. (Too little time until the next cycle migth influence the perception of what is possible to do in one cycle negatively.)
