Path grid selection is not true? Can this be fixed?

I built a boardwalk, out of a square grid path. I added a ride at the end so in a way that it would look as if it was in the boardwalk. I deleted some of the path square to make room, although I deleted two to many. Normally I would select off of the grid from the rest of the boardwalk and plop those two spaces in. Unfortunately the path is not connecting even though visually they are the same height and I DID select that grid. I have had this problem so many times before and I'm really just wondering if I'm overlooking something. Also, what's up with those perma-holes that are un-smoothable that rides create that virtually breaks paths going over it?
