Engineers Paying for ship kits and other cosmetics?

I don't like that we have to pay extra to customize our ships. I feel its like FDev is milking the players. That said, I want to support them, but I feel we should have a way to customize our ships cosmetically with in game effort or currency. I think a nice balance would be being able to change colors or add a variety of decals with in game currency, but any super nice paint jobs or custom ship kits would have to be bought.

Perhaps I just am tired of spending money on it, I bought both betas, as well as, a few paint jobs. I worry that anything cosmetic from here on will have to be bought. I think its a little silly to pay for something that will hardly be seen much.

So I ask you, fellow commanders, what do you think? Is paying fine? Should all cosmetics be free? Should there be a balance like I mentioned above?

Note: I am NOT yelling at FDev. I am asking how the community feels about paying for all cosmetics.

P.S. Hopefully this won't be an issue, but any fanboys that come screaming "IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T PAY FOR IT" or "GO PLAY SOMETHING ELSE IF YOU NOT HAPPY WITH IT" can go pound sand. I WANT to customize my ships, I just don't really want to pay for every little thing that I want to customize.

I agree. Having a method in-game to attain a sense of identity is healthy to draw people more into said game.

When I come across someone with a paintjob, I think "elitist       who has more money than I do"... and dismiss them as foolish.

Dunno why.

Actually this is players fault. They voted for this sort of system as far I can remember. I´m fairly critical on Frontier on certain issues, but I won´t blame them for this one. Deal with it. [sulk]

Paying for cosmetics in games are more or less standard in today's game industry, and i don't mind that at all. I have never been the kind of player that buys loads of cosmetic upgrades nor do i preorder games just because of some cosmetics or pets you may get if you do so. I do however feel that some cosmetics other than decals should be unlockable within the game as a reward for dedication and hard work, either it be paintjobs or cosmetic add ons.

Way back in the beginning of time (2012) the way FD planned to make money was cash for credits. Probably something like CCP's PLEX for EVE Online, but we had a big discussion and it was agreed that would make the game pay-to-win. Which nobody really wants. So FD have been forced to look for legitimate income streams that don't ruin the game because kids have access to credit cards. So I'm fine with it.

No cosmetics should not be free and paying for this stuff is fine.
Paying for cosmetics is a good non-destructive way (as opposed to p2w) to make a bit more money for a huge project that has no subscription model.
It is much better than selling Anacondas to first time players for 800 bucks.

I am selective myself. I do not pay 10 bucks for a single golden skin for example.
I keep an eye out for special sales.
I like these new ship kits, but I will wait for kits for ships I use often like the Python and the FDL. The Sidewinder and the Eagle and the Cobra I never use, so I do not need these kits.

The only thing I really hope is that FD will eventually implement visual differences for using different thrusters for example, like in early concept art. This should become part of the basic game design.

Perhaps I just am tired of spending money on it

That is reasonable. So the choice is simple then.
FD needs to find ways to make money. I think selling these kits is a good idea.

Hah...

God forbid people have more money than you or are better than you in this world...

God forbid there's inequality both natural and artificial...

They are obviously all foolish elitists that need to be dismissed due to my self-imagined inferiority.

I don't mind. They need to stay in business, and if these little add-ons help with that, I'm fine with it. No one is forcing anyone to buy these things.

But one complaint I do have, is that they NEVER seem to offer this kind of stuff for the larger ships like the Python, Federal Corvette, Cutter, Clipper etc. It seems to ALWAYS be the same three ships every single time. Just look at the imbalance in cosmetic offerings for these same three ships compared to everything else. It is totally ridiculous!

I might of actually purchased one of these kits if they offered it for the Python or any of the other ships I actually use in the game. Since I no longer fly the Sidewinder, Eagle or Cobra, I of course will be passing yet again on the latest new offering.

Well I don't accept that cosmetics earned in game is going to bankrupt frontier or this game or it forces pay to win or subs.
In theory it should retain players, keep pop healthy and those with less time for grind can buy cosmetics.
Strange thing to vote against from players and prevent this from being a thing.

Then don't buy them. Pretty easy choice.
I was perfectly fine for buying the kit for my Cobra this morning.

If you want it save up your pennies and buy it when you can afford it. Or, if you are still not an adult, ask your parents for a favor or make a deal with them (chores, good grades, wash the car, etc...) and earn the stuff you want.
That has worked for years. :)

As so many have pointed out, those items are pure vanity at the moment. It's something you only ever see when you get into the habit of taking flashy screenshots, or in the case of bobbleheads, you realise that you really should have removed that bloody Christmas tree before you left for a two-week exploration trip.

It's something you buy to support further development of the game.

Or you don't.

Either way, there's really little reason to complain about it.

Don't see a problem paying for such extras but i think the pricing is all wrong

DVD £5 to £10 depending how good its is
DVD season set £10-£15
small wall mural £4-£8
think of your own and compare :)

My point here is, the price should reflect what you are rellay getting, you can watch all the above over an over, you can look at your ship kit over and over

You can swap, lend or resell Dvds and murals, you can't swap, lend or sell your ship kits.

Dvds and murals are independent of a service in witch to use them. Kits require the game (which the player already payed for)

so i don't feel £8 is representative of the products value.. maybe more like £4 pound

if your just thikings,'what? Dvds and murals' then it best to walk away now :p

I'd love there to finally be some cosmetic items that you can get within the game, instead of paying for everything. There was another thread about this subject that was closed by Brett C, he linked to a thread/poll from the DDF about paying for cosmetics... The response with the most votes was along the lines of 'some cosmetics will be bought with money'... SOME cosmetics. So far, it's been ALL cosmetics, not including the EGX decal we all got. I guess there was a paint job too? I've never seen it.

Edit: Ah, Robert linked to the poll just above me.

Edit #2: And I just remembered the 'free' gold Asp paint job we all got for buying Horizons before they re-classed it and cut the price. But does that count? It seemed more like 'because we cut the price to make everything easier to understand, here's a paint job.'

I can pay for paintjobs and visual improvements of the ships. I can pay for any not pay 2 win item.

It is OK for me. FD need to eat something. devs have their own life, game is not open source, free, they just simply need money for life and for game development. It is natural and in my opinion it is very OK payment model.

The members of the Fuel Rats and Distant Worlds are being awarded decals for in-game actions (subject to some participation criteria) - that would seem to count as available in-game and not in the store.

Yep, the argument won out. I'm fine with the cosmetics the way it is :)

In a perfect world of course we'd earn all stuff from playing the game but such is life.. I wonder if some of the cosmetics are a little over priced but as folks have said FD need to make money some how.. In fairness though, we have gotten some nice cosmetics included with expansions and so on.. Was really happy with the black friday paintjobs..
