Engineers Paying for ship kits and other cosmetics?

I don't like that we have to pay extra to customize our ships. I feel its like FDev is milking the players. That said, I want to support them, but I feel we should have a way to customize our ships cosmetically with in game effort or currency. I think a nice balance would be being able to change colors or add a variety of decals with in game currency, but any super nice paint jobs or custom ship kits would have to be bought.

Perhaps I just am tired of spending money on it, I bought both betas, as well as, a few paint jobs. I worry that anything cosmetic from here on will have to be bought. I think its a little silly to pay for something that will hardly be seen much.

So I ask you, fellow commanders, what do you think? Is paying fine? Should all cosmetics be free? Should there be a balance like I mentioned above?

Note: I am NOT yelling at FDev. I am asking how the community feels about paying for all cosmetics.

P.S. Hopefully this won't be an issue, but any fanboys that come screaming "IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T PAY FOR IT" or "GO PLAY SOMETHING ELSE IF YOU NOT HAPPY WITH IT" can go pound sand. I WANT to customize my ships, I just don't really want to pay for every little thing that I want to customize.

Just deal with it, are you look at the stores in your home town and complaining that they don't give you stuff for free?

That paintjob is only available for the Cobra MK IV as far as I know.
But here you have it for the Mark III?

No, you are not confused. You are right, that it is only available for sale for the Cobra Mk. IV on the store.
If you pre-ordered Horizons, or like me own a lifetime expansion pass, you got the 3 Horizons Launch Paintjobs for the Cobra Mk. III for free.

If you're not happy, don't buy them. It's absolutely a vanity thing anyway. FD should definitely be charging for this stuff as it's a great way of making a bit more revenue.

I would rather FD had paid cosmetics than supporting a cash shop where you can buy credits, modules, ships with real life cash.

I mean face it, FD needs a reliable revenue besides selling yearly expansion pass(which is technically a cheaper version of monthly subscription of other MMOs, Horizons $45 vs MMO subs $15x12=$180) and paid cosmetics are the most harmless and the lesser evil among the options.

It isn't an MMO so comparing it to one is silly, they don't have dedicated servers they have auto scaling ones, it isn't structured like an MMO and their expansions aren't delivered like an MMO, its more like indie - expansion lite, where they sell 50% of an expansion then fill the content in over a year before doing it again.

I mean I agree with your point about cosmetics over real pay 2 win stuff but Elite really can't be compared to other game systems because it isn't like them. If their game is as successful as their numbers indicate they could easily have some or all in-game cosmetics be earnable they don't need propping up, they just charge for it because people are willing to pay for it, a very sound business principle.

Cosmetics to earn some cash is totally fine with me, and those kits are pretty cool. I bought a few skins after the Engineers release because I was pleased with the expansion. I'll buy a few kits when they release the next patch if I like it. I think this is good for the game.

I think it just fine. It's a way to support FD that isn't mandatory, and doesn't affect gameplay. Just right if you ask me.

Well I don't accept that cosmetics earned in game is going to bankrupt frontier or this game or it forces pay to win or subs.
In theory it should retain players, keep pop healthy and those with less time for grind can buy cosmetics.
Strange thing to vote against from players and prevent this from being a thing.

They have to pay to run the servers somehow. These things are not free. There is a reason why online games generally either have a subscription model, or have this sort of thing, or have P2W. Having played P2W games and subscription games, I find this model to be the best. I just wish they had MORE customization options for me to buy! (FD: Red Ignition paintjob for more ships please! Also, ANY paintjobs for the Imperial Eagle would be nice!)

Also, by comparison to most online games I have played? Getting all the stuff I wanted is FAR cheaper in Elite: Dangerous than in most of them.

All cosmetics should pay a tiny amount of money. It is no unfair advantage and is a good money source for FD. I am happy to purchase more cosmetics as soon as they have fixed 2.1. ...

I am not disagreeing with you, but LOL is F2P so that doesn't really apply.

Its a good way to support FDev, and I am not saying everything should be free. I appreciate the polite responses, thats what I was after. I simply wanted to know what the community thought. Similar to most of you, I would rather pay for cosmetics over P2W or a subscription.

However, I still like my idea of being able to choose one of few colors upon purchasing a ship (like one of three). For example, I was thinking it could help with figuring out which cobra is my pirate ship and which is my mining ship, etc.

No to P2W/P2P. Yes to paid cosmetics. Lesser evil.

Putting in some purchasable with in game credits paintjobs wouldn't hurt. I don't care about looks in all the MMOs i've played but having those credits paintjobs might be a way to appease others i suppose.

Also, anyone knows why i have a Black and Gold paintjob? I've never purchased anything from the cosmetics shop before.

1. I mentioned already about how screaming fanboys can go pound sand. Your hate was never welcomed here.

2. I spent $150 already buying into both betas, plus getting some of the nicer paint jobs. Is it really too much to ask to be able to paint my python one of few BASIC, PLAIN colors without coughing up another $5 or $10?

3. I don't go to places complaining that they don't give free things, but if I go and buy something brand new (whether its a computer or a car) I WILL PICK WHAT COLOR I WANT.

4. Referring back to #1, if you are still going to comment here after I said I didn't want those kind comments, AT LEAST hit me with something better than "Just deal with it...blah blah...stores...free stuff". Come on, let the hate really flow.

The black skin was from ordering horizons before or around black friday. Its for every ship, and was some-what a free skin. Which I was very thankful for, because black looks good.
