PC Gamer Article on Odyssey

I think this info is new.
"[...]we also have physical mission givers that exist in the ports. The one real difference is that, because you're meeting face to face, you can actually negotiate for an improved payment."

So we can pick missions the same way we did in Elite 2. That's great!

"Ok, I will do it for 50x your offered pay."
"What?! That's ridiculous!"
"Here's the thing cupcake, I know where you live. You are the only outpost on this entire planet, which my T10 can glass during brunch with a hellstorm of dumbfires, and we both know your outpost's AA is a joke."
"Alright, 51x offered pay. Thank you, CMDR."

This is gonna be awesome! :D

One of the concept art pieces includes a date of 3303. I wonder if that gives an idea of when work started on Odyssey (i.e. 2017).

I know they said they ramped up full production in 2019, but pre-production, prototyping, etc...

Oh yeah, the genomics lab one

Nice spot!

Does look more on the 'early days' end of the concept art scale. (The character models look more basic / place-holder-y too, plus all bald ;))

Interesting that jetpacks look like they were already on the cards if so.

(Well I'm guessing they're not portable coffee machines anyway ;))

Yeah!

I also noticed: the same info screen also shows what appears to be a cell with structures and organelles marked out, as well as some sliders and other iconography.

Unlikely, but I wonder if that gives some insight into the new xenobiology activities or minigames. I'm getting the vibe of an FSS counterpart, but instead of clicking around a system, we're dissecting and exploring the cellular structures of biologicals we find, while avoiding damaging them, or something.

I mean, it's probably just a decoration, but it could be something more.

If they're introducing a whole Xenobiology skill ladder to stand alongside Trade, Combat and Exploration, there surely must be a chunk of new gameplay involved, beyond just pointing and holding a button.

Not sure if those screen shots - previously in the article were posted elsewhere in this qualty though?

Yeah most of those screenshots are entirely "new" (at least exclusive to PC Gamer).

Also, this below appears to be an Outpost-type social hub, which we haven't seen before. The texture visible through the skylight appears to be a huge or very close planet seen from orbit. You couldn't see that directly from the internal starport types we've seen till now.

Shame about the whole "magnetic boots" gravity thing, but I can see why they wouldn't want everyone just spinning everywhere.

Edit: scratch that, it's an asteroid base hub, the rock texture is the inner wall of the station.

Yeah was prob too early days to inform us much on what the xenobio scanning stuff is. I'm sure a discovery-scanning / detail-scanning set of mini games await ;). Would be good if it was a step on the FSS though. (We've seen some surprisingly detailed info on game mechanics available for EDO stealth already, so would be another pleasant surprise if it's actually a fleshed out set of game mechanics. I'm staying sceptical at this point though. Can see how the discovery process could be refined, but I'm guessing the bio scan will have to boil down to a 'mini game based on pseudo-science constants / components' at best).

The thing that occurred to me about the pic is they must have already been thinking about a hybrid Legs + Atmos DLC at that point. Was wondering when that decision was made.

It's a cool little insight anyway. If definitely circa 2017 then it does suggest they've had a fair old run at ideas that are making it into the game.
