PC install question

When I download ED, it goes directly to my "C" drive which because it's small and window's takes up the vast majority, it will be filled to capacity very soon. In fact, I can not download RDR2 because there is in sufficient space available. I did manage to down load RDR2's Launcher and Social Club to my "D" which has a couple of hundred gig to install stuff. And plan to purchase and install RDR2 this coming weekend.

My question is, can I move ED in its entirety to my "D" drive and if not, how do I down load it again but but make sure it goes to the "D" and not the darn "C".?

mine is on my H:\ drive, so there's definitely a path selection feature somewhere in the installer.

all your important stuff - your keybinds and config - is kept separately in users/you/appdata/local (the two Frontier folders in there) so if you delete and reinstall, at least you won't have to set up all that again

Because of my antiquated internet connection, it takes me almost 16 hours to download ED. I made sure that ED didn't exist on my pc any where. Then started the download from Frontier, either I blinked or there just wasn't an option to install any where else but the apparent default "C". I'd really hate to have to spend another 16 hours attempting to do it again, unless someone knows exactly how or where the option to install it else where is.

I've heard that one can make room on there sd by moving large games and such without having to download and reinstall it or them. Hence my two part question.

well luckily i had an old installer saved that i could test on my lounge room music PC, i wasn't willing to mess with my real install on this rig...

the path selection bit is pretty much the very first thing you see when you start the installer - it wants to name it 'EDLaunch' - make your changes there and you should be ok, it shows a bit of blurb on that same screen explaining what goes where

You don't have to reinstall ED every time. Backup the game folders and put them somewhere. Try the reinstall to a different folder, if it lets you, stop the install after it makes the directories (and starts dl'ing). Copy the files from your backup to the new folders. Verify files. Same as if you dl'd it from scratch.

You can create a folder "shortcut" that links it to another folder with the same name on a different partition. It's called a "symbolic link" while the command is called "mklink" in Windows.

The easiest way of doing it is with the software called "Directory Linker" (DirLinker.exe).

You can download that software from:

The price of SSDs has dropped right down. I bought a 1TB one when my 256K SSD filled up. It came with cloning software that couldn't be simpler to use. I just plugged it in and asked it to clone my C drive. I didn't even have to reboot IIRC. It cloned then renamed my C TO D, leaving it in place as a backup.

UPDATE:
If anyone is interested, moving a game of any size from your "C" drive to an other is a piece of cake; Providing of course you have room on the other drive, DUH!

ED in it's entirety can or was found on my pc in the Program Files (x86) directory on my "C" drive.
Rather than copy it, I chose to cut it, afterwards I pasted it to a directory on my "D" drive which I had made called Program Files. Which also contained the launcher for RDR2 which I had downloaded previously.

Once pasted, I doubled click the previous icon and got a message stating it had been moved.
I found the ED launcher in the "D" drive, made a desk top icon and double clicked it. It first asked me to sign in, then sent me a code to copy paste. Once I did that, the new icon worked. I deleted the previous. And now have considerably more space on my "C" for window upgrades and such. And all my games are on my new "D" drive.

I realize that most of y'all are probably PC geeks and though I was some 20+ years ago, technology has increased considerably faster than I can or could comprehend it. Thus this was quite the endeavor. Though asking the right question on google got me some great advice, one still needs a good understanding of how to do things with in a pc files.

I'll be taken a hiatus for an unknown amount of time. More than likely, until the carrier and the new upgrade is available. Until then, have fun, I'll miss y'all and no, you can't have my stuff. In the words of the terminator, I'LL BE BACK!
