PC shut down 6900xt on G9 Samsung at 5120 x 1440

Hi All,
Not sure what is going on but everytime I try and play Oddysey my PC shuts down after 10 mins or so. I don't have this issue in other games like Red dead 2, Warzone, Apex etc.

I have run a stupid amount of benchmarks and stress tests but I cannot recreate this issue. It only happens in Odyssey. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have had something similar. Altho it was before even in the game but at the launcher. I found my issue to actually be the monitor itself. It's a 240 hrtz monitor where an older o e is only 64. While on the better one it would go to black, freeze, then computer would full reset. While playing on the older monitor. Iv never once had the same trouble. Again this is when the launcher is on screen

@Nfeo Thanks. Yes, I am running at 240hrtz 5120 x 1440. Haven't tried on 120hrtz. Will definitely give that a try.

@MickyG1982 exactly what I thought initially hence the Stress tests etc. I even went so far as buying a New case and have 9 Fans installed with a AIO Water cooler. Red Dead utilises my CPU and GPU more and I don't suffer a PC shutdown while playing. When playing Horizons I have no issue either. I have tried under-volting and lowering Clock rates on the 6900x, which in turn lowers the Temps. Anyway, it should Thermal throttle before it switches my PC off.

yes check your event logs, any overheat event should be logged
depending how good your bios is it may also log thermal events
if your pc has triggered a thermal shutdown then your pc may not reboot for several minutes. if your pc reboots immediately and your event log has no thermal events the issue could be with your drivers or PSU

Went down to 120hz shut down still persists. :(

I have had a similar issue, and it only started with Oddesy... checking temps on my 2080ti via MSI afterburner and Speedfan

Its happened in two spots... but the one that occurs most often is the Oddesy loading video. Just hard Resets the PC... ive run stress tests like Heaven on ultra with no issues and firestrike... seems to be something wrong with Oddessy in general.

CPU 50c
GPU 45c

i7-5820k CPU
4x16gb DDR4 @ 3000mhz HyperX Ram
AORUS 2080ti Extreme
installed to a 1tb WD m.2 nvme

if the PC is rebooting then this would indicate an issue other than heat, first place id look at would be running a clean re-install of your GPU drivers, preferably using a tool like DDU (display driver uninstaller) to completely remove the drivers before reinstalling

its also worth checking your windows event logs for any indication of issues which may be recorded in the last few minutes before the crash

Sadly I’ve done all this, even verified game files and completely uninstalled and then reinstalled elite dangerous. I’ve tested numerous other factors and all that seems to be coming up is elite dangerous causing a critical crash. I’ve looked at the crash logs but not quite sure what I’m looking at unfortunately. So for me at this moment, Oddesy is unplayable, but horizons is playable.

Update : my friend had the crazy idea of deleting files located in ..."C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics"

As I had tried everything, i figured... why not... to my surprise, no crash!

get in game adjust to my settings... no crash. To this point my problem seems to have been corrected.

Just to close off this thread. I have not found a solution to this. The only partial fix was to narrow the screen to 2k. Elite dangerous Odyssey worked when placed in 2k and has not caused any issues in this resolution, apart from the usual bugs. When I place my resolution back into 5120 x 1440 the game crashes after a while.

Just to -reiterate, I play a number of games in 5120 x 1440 and have no issues what so ever. Odyssey is the only game this happens in. I have a 1000w platinum Power supply and 128gb of Ram, a 5900x and a 6900xt. All other games run like butter.

Your power supply is certainly upto scratch quality wise.
Just seen this thread and i can think that you should check you are NOT Daisy chaining the PCIE express power connectors.

I know 6900 XT and NVIDIA 3080/3090 can spike electricity usage quite high for miliseconds. That could be causing an issue especially if your daisy chained which isnt recommended for graphic cards, though many people do it and wonder why they get black screens and crashes.

If not daisy chained, i would certainly check for power usage and spikes at different settings and also see about using different PCIE power cables see if that resolves problem.

With Odyssey not being optimised i can well imagine it causing undue stress on parts that causes above normal power usage that can then cause the system to crash out.

Nope, but a pc shutting down after 10 mins indicates something is overheating, quite badly.
Not necessary, my dude - another reason is the power supply - the PSU . If the GPU or/and CPU enter in OC, they will "ask" for more power - if the PSU cannot feed those extra Watts of power, the result is a shoot-down, also.
OP, try to "read" the temperatures in Odyssey ( use , for ex, Aida64 ! ) - if the CPU / GPU are under 80Cº, then the other possible reason i the PSU. ( power supply)

But to conclude this, remember - all Odyssey users - you are lab rats working for the EDevs in order to fix a horrible codding for a game who degraded you from "Ship Commander" to the rank of a "dirty space marine recruit" and is going in the direction of a second-hand crappy RPG shooter, with system requirements bigger than on the games 3x bigger and 5x more complex. Again, crappy codding.

Doesn't really say a lot... if that PSU complies to what it says on the tin, it should be fine. Some manufacturers seem to be rating their PC PSUs to chinese audio P.M.P.O. standards, though.
One thing you may try, if your PSU supports it, is to switch the PSU to single rail (if it's now on multi rail), or multi rail (if now on single rail). The former makes more sense to me than the latter, but I also could construct an argument for the latter - and it probably won't make things worse.

Another issue I recently found...

If you're using a typical tower case, lay it flat for setup. If it fails once you stand it up, it's likely because today's heavy GPU's might have warped the pci slot enough to make the card lose contact with all the pins in the slot

I had to adjust a support bracket to the right amount of sag to get an upgrade working properly. Don't over-correct the sag or in effect you'd be lifting the rear of the card away from the pins on the bottom of the pci slot

HTH
