PC TO TV

Just wondering how many people are using a flat screen tv as a monitor and whether or not in order to do that you have to use an HDMI lead? Or are there other options?

There are probably plenty of people doing this. If you already have the TV it might be better to post the make and model of that and your graphics card and then people can give you more directed advice.

It can be done. TVs are not necessarily the ideal device for gaming but they are big :)
What connectors do you have on your graphics card and what do you have on your TV?
Assuming you have a normal HD TV running at 1080p, you'll need to make sure your PC can run the game at 1080p and the sync rate of your TV or it may well not be worth doing.

I do this on my HTCP box and played Elite for a while. It has a light pack on the back of it also so the screen spills out to the wall behind it which is pretty neat when playing elite. I'd actually like to get a video of it and post it up on the forums just to show everyone.

The connection really depends on your equipment and TV, but I do use an HDMI so that both audio and video are done with one cable. Some games translate really well to a TV (Racing Games, and Elite specifically) and some games are just a pain in the ass to play on the TV (MMO's anything with lots of info in the periphery of the screen, or lots of text reading).

Well I just bought one of these http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/deskt...x-810-211na-gaming-pc-10014569-pdt.html#cat-0

as for the TV its a pretty non descript flat screen.... I just didnt want to go and spend however much it is for a HDMI Cable if it wasnt worth while.

Yep, HDMI to 38", 1080 and it looks staggeringly good. A VGA will also work, but haven't tried it as HDMI was there and available.
I bought a 60" behemoth for the living room so as to steal the 38 for my mancave - I think I've spent about $2000 on this game so far, just as well I'm enjoying it! :)

I'm doing this now to a 32" 1080p TV as it was the only display I had laying around until I get a monitor after Christmas. TVs are not really meant to be viewed that close, so they're usually not as sharp as a monitor of the same size and resolution.

As far as connections, most TVs support HDMI, DVI or VGA. Of course each connection has a maximum resolution it supports.

To cover myself off, Im just looking at getting a nice sized monitor to go with it now...

Can anyone recommend a well priced decent sized good quality monitor??

What specs would I need to look at?

All help gratefully received as Ive not bought a new PC in over 10 years so, things seem to have moved on at a pace since the last time I was PC and Monitor shopping!

Whats the min size I should look at? 24"?

Yep, Im on about £1300 for the Base Unit and whatever else I have to pay out for the TV/Monitor! No more treats for me now for a long while... Hope its worth it!!! Been waiting for this game for ever!! By all accounts it will take about the same amount of time to get the hang of it! lol

So how does a 32" TV work on your eyes from that distance?? Must get a bit of eye strain that close to a TV for what will most likely be several hours stints!

I'm using DVI-D to get 1920x1080 on my TV off my laptop. I believe it does cause me greater eye-strain than normal monitor use (but only after way too many hours).

I'd make sure the HDMI cable is reasonable quality, especially if you need a long one. Unshielded, cheap ebay cables can cause interference on your TV when other electrical items are switched on and off. No need to go overboard, just don't opt for the absolute cheapest 5 dollar type cables.

I plug mine into a 40" TV from time to time and sit about 2 metres away from it.

I think it looks great from that distance.

I use a 32" TV as my monitor. Viewing distance varies between 50 and 100 cm (~20 - 40"), depending on if lean forward or back in my chair. Haven't noticed any difference in eye strain compared to the 24" monitor I use at work with similar viewing distance.

Using a DVI to HDMI cable, no sound through the TV.

Yes OP, 51 inch HDMI 1040p 60Hz. It was the el cheapo special @ Walmart last Christmas and under $400. Works just fine. As a bonus, I use it to replace cable TV, etc. Can't recommend the scheme highly enough! Now, if I could just find the room for 2 more... first I will need a larger desk!:D

Edit: Sorry, 1080p... almost tax season here and one of the more well known forms is the infamous 1040.

Prior to my rift, I was using a 40 LED tv. It isn't an expensive one, either, and it worked just fine. I just ran a cable from the HDMI out port on the computer. Fair warning, you'll spoil yourself.

Ok, I think thats the case for the HDTV well covered... other option is a monitor. Currently have a small 17" on my older pc, which I dont think will really do it justice.... how big do I need to go, as the coffers aren't bottomless. Min 24"?

How are you getting on with the Rift? How much did that set you back financially?

I have 50" 720 plasma....it would be great if it were 50" 1080+ LCD, but idiot here thought he was getting a banging deal without checking what the AR was.

Lesson learned.

Depending on your view distance, and expected resolution you should be picking a monitor that supports your use not just based on size alone. If you are buying it specifically for elite and need it pretty cheap then I might be inclined to suggest BenQ's MVA panels. They have really high native contrast ratios so the dark on bright scenes would look really great, and they are fairly cheap. Otherwise I would suggest a higher frequency monitor for gaming on so that you have less issues with v-sync or visual tearing.

Be very careful, I ended up spending 3x my initial budget once I started speccing up a gaming PC from scratch!
(but I'm glad I did!)
