PCGamer mangles an Elite livestream

So, PCGamer are doing a livestream right now on Elite, supposedly doing some PVP combat versus one of them in an Anaconda.

Instead, what you have is a bunch of amateurs that don't even know how to play the game, they have no game audio streaming, and get this, this is the worst - they have some idiot hammering sawing and banging loudly in the background doing some kind of repairs...

Yeah gg PCGamer. Way to show off Elite to those not backing, looks complete rubbish.

Sheesh.

I have to admit, watching streamers that don't know how to play the game is incredibly frustrating. I have zero interest in watching someone learn how to play. PCGamer has been posting ED related things for a while now, so I'm surprised that they don't have their stuff together.

In fact, unless PCGamer is having a dev interview there's no reason to watch them. There are other streamers on right now that actually pay attention to the chat and interact with the stream.

It's certainly not the best advert for the game, which is a huge shame. The player who is actually streaming doesn't seem to be one of the ones talking.

Well done to all the players in the chat for trying to answer the questions and keep the mood upbeat against the flow of, "This game is boring" coming from the non-players.

I'm sure it is boring, not the game itself, but people fumbling with trying to learn just how to fly around without crashing. The only beginner video lately that I enjoyed was one guy who was doing the same stuff, but at some point he opened up the galaxy map, and eventually zoomed out from the starting worlds. And you can guess the rest...he pauses, says "No. No way." Zooms out again. "All this? We can go..." Zoom out. "Oh my god." That was fun, just watching someone realize the potential.

A few of them are streaming but they aren't in the same instance so even when their in the same place they cant see each other

I'm a fan of PC Gamer generally speaking, but got to say they're making a real hash of this stream :(.

I agree.... We (King5ton and I among others) have repeatedly said go to FD and show some action and some 'wow' stuff... Instead they're just mooching around almost permanently in SuperCruise without much in the way of a plan....

FD, can you make sure that next time you allow a major magazine to do a live stream that you make sure they are given a potted list of things they really should do to show the game off to its best....?

They've royally embarrassed FD and they're not doing the game any favours whatsoever.... Shameful really... Shame on PCG for the dreadful aimless stream.

FD is involved in this stream? I just started watching.

Sadly these are the perils of having a game that anyone can pay for access to and stream if they want. We don't even know if they asked for permission to do this, they probably didn't because they don't need it.

If they did ask for it? Well, it's pretty disappointing stuff all told. It doesn't show the game in a positive light at all and reflects poorly on anyone involved. You'd expect better from PCGamer, but I guess when it comes to streaming content their standards aren't particularly high.

I watched an hour of the guy flying around and doing nothing, then went out for a half hour to a customer, came back and he was STILL flying around doing nothing

EDIT: FDEVs should have been the ones streaming ;)

It gets worse.... see the content of their original promo article...

'The latest PC Gamer UK team livestream will take place on Wednesday the 20th of August from 3PM BST to 5PM BST—click that link to find out the time in other timezones. We'll be playing Elite Dangerous in a custom scenario that we've come up with ourselves, supported by the devs at Frontier.

Our own Elite veteran Andy Kelly will be flying a kitted-out Anaconda, the largest ship currently in the game. In his hold will be a few units of gold, the target of a horde of hunters that will descend on him as he explores the galaxy. The gold is minimally valuable in and of itself, but it's our Maltese Falcon, our Briefcase-in-Pulp-Fiction: it doesn't matter what it's worth, it matters who holds it.

That team of bounty hunters will be made up of PC Gamer UK staff—me, Sam Roberts, Phil Savage, Ben Griffin and Tom Senior—as well as developers from Frontier. Expect uneasy alliances, sudden but inevitable betrayals, and perhaps the odd cameo appearance by David Braben.

All you need to do to to watch is to subscribe to the PC Gamer Twitch.tv channel. You can also subscribe to individual hunters via their personal accounts:
•Tom Senior [Stream]
•Andy Kelly [Stream]
•Samuel Roberts [Stream]
•Chris Thursten [Stream]
•Phil Savage [Stream]
•Ben Griffin

We'll post again tomorrow with a dual stream link. See you then'

You can read the full article (if you're that way inclined) here.

Wonder if any of the other streams were better... wish I'd looked at that latest version of the article before the stream started... I'd have swapped stream pretty sharpish!

well that has to be the worst advert for ED i have ever seen, if i did not know ED and watched that , it would turn me away from the game,

2 of the 5 streamers had good streams, but their plan was floored,,, not once did they really show anyone what ED is all about .... for the 1st time i was disgusted ......

Maybe this stream was one of the bounty hunters, who didn't know the game or how to fly? The setup sounds pretty neat, if you have people who know how the game works doing it. Indeed it sounds like some are doing now on Twitch and multi Twitch streams.

It's like doing a demo of multiplayer Halo, but several of the key players broadcasting loaded the wrong map and keep killing themselves with stupid stuff.

Someone from PCG finally showed up in the stream chat (well he claims he is) to apologise etc

Exitwarp: Hey guys, Chris from PCG here. I'm sorry that the server issues stopped that from working like we'd hoped it would.

Exitwarp: We'd done a bunch of tests but everything crumbled under pressure like they sometimes do.

Exitwarp: Yeah, the construction was annoying.

Exitwarp: We were given no warning, but we'd set everything up with Frontier for today so couldn't move the stream

Bah_humbug: 'These things happen'. It just sucks that it probably put some people off the game, even though the game had nothing to do with it.

Exitwarp: TLDR: thanks for your time, we may try this again when the game supports it better.

Exitwarp: I hope that's not the case. It's still a rad game to look at.

Exitwarp: Yeah. Perhaps we should have held off for a future build.

Exitwarp: Well we got a private server set up to fix the matchmaking issues, with the downside that the public couldn't join. In the end we had both problems.

Exitwarp: In any case, I wanted to make sure you guys knew that we weren't patting ourselves on the back and calling it a job well done

Exitwarp: We're probably going to try a non-streamed version of this to create a video and magazine feature from. Without the pressure of the live show, we can focus on specific problems

Now if people are doing stuff like this on the real game, and they had trouble on their private server, why are they blaming the build? I mean great that they admit it was a mess, but the public game right now is working fine for what they wanted to do.

Sounds like they didn't try a trial run first to make sure it would be okay.

They didn't want to risk having any pilots with more than a nanosecond of stick time evaporating their insurance funds :)

I didn't see the stream myself, but it sounds pretty rough.

I hope they get a chance to try again soon.
