Pedals vs twist yaw for ED - WHOA what a difference!

Got pedals to go with my Warthog this weekend. Have been using an X52 Pro with twist action for yaw until now. And wow - is it different with ED!

Pedals feel incredibly unnatural - hopefully will get better with practice. I didn't realize just how much I used yaw until I got the pedals and had to keep reminding myself not to twist the Warthog stick for yaw. I'd say I'm about a 50% less effective pilot with pedals, now.

Time for practice! Thank goodness for the tutorials - as my flight skills have been reset by about 2-3 months. Hopefully I'll get better and it won't be a 2-3 month climb back up to where I was, skill-wise.

If anyone has any tips for how to get used to pedals, I'd sure appreciate them!

I may end up in the same situation as you later this evening. I'm using the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog, and am picking up my first set of pedals on the way home from work today. Best of luck getting used to them.

I'll give you a hint..

Twist - Lateral thrust (side - side)
Rudder - yaw
map a rotary to vertical..

full 6dof at any moment, with out ever touching a key

Plus for a lot of Rudder pedal users we are used to the Yaw being our feet.. we either fly for real or fly a lot of sims :)

I am totally the opposite. I have both Warthog + rudder pedals setup and an X52 Pro. I find the twist action of the X52 very un-natural and difficult to get used to. But then apart from flying light aircraft as well as most flight sims, rudder pedals become natural and done without thinking.

I started with a cheapo twist stick until I got a full CH setup. There are not too many ridiculous input devices you can have for a game like this. Though I much prefer the roll on the pedals than the yaw.

Very interesting! My Warthog is in the post and I'm used to an X-45 which has the rocker rudder under the throttle which you use with your index and middle fingers on your left hand. I've really liked that set up over the years but I'm moving on and wondering if I should get pedals and which ones if I do. All I know is that I don't like twist yaw because I find it hard to control all three axes on one stick.

I use the saitek pro pedals, there are also combat pedals by saitek. You can also go for the CH pedals, but they are a bit pricey. I use my saiteks now for about 6years.

I have had various rudder pedals over the years. So far the best seem to be the Saitek ones. I didn't like the CH ones though I have got CH gear as well as the Warthog.

You will find changing how you control yaw takes a bit of time to get used to. Muscle memory etc.

I have used various rudder pedals over the last 16 years in combat flight sims (Aces High and before that Air Warrior) so am totally used to them and they feel completely natural. On the odd occasion I have tried to use a twisty stick (conventions etc) I have found them very difficult to use. :)

Thanks for the feedback! Saitek Combat pedals on order.
And that completes the pre-release spending splurge - unless I find myself engaging a divorce lawyer :/

Had the T Rudder pedals by VKB.

Very well built and small , no toe brakes though.

Also you have to use 3rd party software to join device axis together to get them working in Elite or they aren't seen.

Think its an Elite dangerous bug.

You'll get used to the pedals and will wonder how you ever managed to use twist. There is an adjustment to set the friction that you can play with - I leave mine at the lowest friction setting.
