Peek of the Week - Iceteroids

Just seen this posted over at Reddit:

Looking good. :)

Hopefully we can get some translucent ice too...

Looks good. I read these are concept models for how they want the procedural ice-asteroids to look in-game.

Although not strictly an ED video, it does contain some of the best ice I've seen in a space game.
If Frontier do half as good a job on the ice then we will be in for a visual treat!

That ice is straight from a water pipe.

Space ice is not pure water, it's most likely dirty as hell. If you want to see what it looks like then have a look at what Rosetta just sent us:

They're Imperial icesteroids.

Do you really think that the Empire would permit any riff-raff ice rock in it's jurisdiction?...Lowers the tone of the whole neighbourhood donchaknow.

The have special Ice cleaning slave gangs ensuring the quality of Imperial Isteroids...for the glory of the Emperor (may he live forever).

Seriously though, I agree and thanks for the link :).

Indeed you are not wrong sir! ;)
But there's nothing wrong with a little creative license squeezing it's way into the game. Realism in a fictional computer game is only good in moderate doses.

:).

It could be a way to circumvent reality. Very good idea

:)

Agreed. While real ice asteroids look just like your average rock/dirt asteroid, we also have ring systems in-game with impossible density, because it looks cool. And I prefer it that way :).

These look like objects of very thin glass rather than lumps of ice. Difficult in a realtime engine to do proper (blurry) refractions, but without any kind of refraction at all on transparent objects you just get this hollow look. I think the FD ice already looks a lot better. (imo)

Ignoring the duplicates in the picture I think those iceteroids look truly superb.
But by now I expect everything FD produces to look superb :).

Ice in space can be very reflective under the right circumstances. I can't wait to visit Saturn. It must be magnificent.

I am not very impressed by that ice in X Rebirth by the way, on the contrary it looks weird and unrealistic, even considering the fact that it is clear water from a burst pipe. It does not look solid as it should. FD can do much better I'm sure.
