People Making Videos..

I'm all for it. I enjoy seeing the alpha's... BUT !!!
People who have no clue of what they are doing should NOT put their video up - "to get in first" or whatever else.
It's not only frustrating watching somebody bumble around hopelessly, it also detracts from the game.
How about #1, practice first ! and #2, KNOW WHAT ELITE IS.. rather than loading it, assuming you know what you're doing, and embarrassing yourself AND the product with your YouTube video!

To those who DO know what Elite is, HOW its played, and can actually FOLLOW CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS IN GAME... keep up the good work.

I have been making videos for people who do not have access to the Alpha. I made a video on Friday that was my first commentary and first 'impressions'. I had a bit of trouble with the docking and hit the station a couple of times. Is that the one your referring to?

Personally if you screw up then that's great....I want see how hard it is and the mistakes people make also how they rectify it second go otherwise the game looks a doddle to play

Please continue to make your videos Zeewolf .. I for one appreciate anything that's put up from the alpha especially real problems not rehearsed perfection ;)

I don't know for sure he's talking about my video. But I find it odd that anyone would feel the only way to promote the game is to show people being wonderful at it. There are lots of space games that have hard-core communities and appear intimidating for anyone wanting to get into the game. Do you want to send a signal out that Elite really is only for the Elite? because it really isn't

I personally love you-tubers like 'sidestrafe' and the 'mighty jingles' who don't try to be the very best at the games they play, it makes it look like anyone could have a go.

I was wearing the Oculus Rift in the second part of the 'first impressions' video and was more interested in showing off the space station, talking about how amazing it looked and talking about the ships that I could see and wowing at the ships being taken underneath. One person left a comment saying that my inefficient flying made his eyes bleed. Fair enough, but a tiny bit snobbish? I have suspicion that me talking made it appear worse, nobody had complained in any previous video where I didn't say anything.

I know about Elite, been playing it since the 80's. But if I have to know everything about Elite and play perfectly to make videos then sign me out.

Yup. This is the alpha that we are talking about here. We're supposed to be arsing around trying to break it, not demoing how perfect it is (and god knows alpha 3.0 is most certainly not perfect), nor how we make Ernst Udet look like a rank amateur with our perfect piloting skills. And it's worth noting that although there are some instructions, they are by no means comprehensive.

For example, I tried landing on the pad the opposite way, the deck will not grapple you when you do that, you have to land facing one way and when you depart, the landing pad deck retracts, then rotates, then comes back up so you can launch facing the exit. After you lift off, if you pitch down and take a look, the deck retracts again, rotates 180 degrees ready to accept the next ship which lands. There's no instructions in the game which tell you that happens, you've just got to try stuff out, and you'd quite easily miss the fact that it does that if you were flying about in a completely text book manner.

I apologise.

@Jack Booted Thug

LOL !!! Now that's fantastic !!
Now I know its harder than it looks but CONGRATULATIONS !!

You are probably the first person ever to dock in Reverse !!! In any Elite game :D

Frankly, I thought the tumbling station entrance deserved bonus points for style. As for the landing itself, any one you repair with enough credits is a good one. :D

Come to think of it maybe I am. lol

Then again it is also very likely that the devs have done something like that in the office.

I respectfully disagree. These aren't official promotional videos. They are simply peoples' captured gaming moments in a restricted alpha phase.

I know of some companies that force restrictive NDAs on their alpha testers, so we get to see nothing at all. I love the free flow of information in this ED project/product.

All in all, I have no issue with people uploading videos of exploratory bumbling. It might help me get my own exploratory bumbling "just right", when the beta rolls around. ;)

K.

In some ways it's reassuring to see people not being very good. If all you see are slick videos of people being awesome it can be quite discouraging when you struggle to do things.

Well this is a new complaint.

And I disagree. You get a great feel for the game by watching videos of people botching things up. They can actually be more helpful than 'perfect' ones.

Are you talking about someone in particular? If not, I don't know if we can help you.

this is not just alpha 3, this is also some earlier ones i have seen. I'd rather see 5-10 minutes of quality footage, than 30 minutes of painfully watch someone do something wrong over and over and over.
Now i know we are not all experts, and we all must learn. but do you have to inflict your inabilities to us for 20-30 minutes..
*eg; the guy trying to dock... flying past the pad, saying that someone else took it.. OMG!! then when he found the pad, the landing was painful to watch... when it is SO SIMPLY explained in the newsletter. with plenty of diagrams - OR, just watch the docking tutorial video which explains and shows you how.
(maybe EDIT your video's) - claiming you are looking for bugs, etc is just a weak excuse...

i found the video released that was in the newsletter quite good. it was brief and to the point.
and ive had my rant...

example of good;

well done Ross !

On second thoughts, let's not go to this thread. It's a silly place.

If you're referring to Zeewolf's video, I couldn't disagree more. I found this guy to be very entertaining and I was laughing along with him as he experienced docking for the first time.

These people putting up videos are making an extra effort to share their experiences with us - good and bad. I don't think they can be critisized for that.

To Zeewolf - ignore the OP if he is referring to your video, I for one really enjoyed your part 1 and part 2 videos. Please keep making them. Your commentary is what sets them part. In a very positive way I mean!

but do you have to inflict your inabilities to us for 20-30 minutes..

The quality of a video is subjective - ie - you may not like them but others will.

Like your post - some will react to them warmly and nod, whilst others may not.

Personally it just sounds like you're bitter as you're not in Alpha - When you contribute something maybe I will think differently <shrug>
