Perfect setup?

Well, after months of research, thinking, planning and dreaming, my "perfect Elite System" is now up and running! Just wanted to share the experience so far.

Key components are:
Windows-7 64-bit
i7-6700K with a "moderate" over-clock to 4.6GHz with Corsair H100i cooler
16GB DDR4-2133MHz DRAM
Closed-loop MSI 980Ti SeaHawk (stock boost of 1291MHz)
Samsung 850 Pro SSD (512GB)
Lian-Li PC-08 Case (and why not?!)
Saitek X55 HOTAS
DK2 of course
Sweet-FX for Antialiasing

So, how does it run? Right now I have not checked FPS, but with all setting at Ultra/High, and Rift-Quality at about 80%, it is judder-free and perfect in all situations (including super cruise/jump) EXCEPT when docked in a Coriolis. Flying in is fine, docking/landing is fine, take-off is fine, but when docked on the ground I get a slight "blur" when I look around. No idea why actually being docked seems to be an issue - anyone else see this?

Install when almost fine - I had one problem where brightness/contrast/gamma settings in the RIFT kept resetting to some default so the view was too bright and moving your head looked like you were looking through a dirty pane of glass. Fixed that with a few hours tinkering with setting in the NVIDIA control panel.

I will post FPS and some internal temperatures later.

Thanks,

Mark

Monitor is much too small. Get a 34" ultra wide! There's no point spending all that money and not being able to see the benefits

Also there is far too much ice in that glass.

Why a bigger monitor when he uses a DK2 to play the game?

Good Catch on the monitor... ;) That is just a temporary 1080 IPS 23" which will be replaced with a 27" 1440 in the next month or two :p

Oh... and you can't have too much ice!!! :) :) :)

It should be really fast for Elite. Rift Quality affects performance that much? Mine is at 100% and I have much older PC. GTX 680, i5 2500k.

Your case/liquid cooling is much tidier than mine.

Be honest, this was just a bragging post to make all of us lessers jealous...
Well it worked. I'm jealous.

Hey! Okay... maybe posting a photo was a bit of bragging... but the rest is serious! I was worried from reading so many reviews that even with a high-end system problems can occur and the experience is not as good as you would hope. So I tried to keep it fairly vanilla and simple - since Elite is the only game I play :) My hope is that others will not feel hesitant - if you want, go ahead and invest and you will not be disappointed! :)

Thanks - I spent quite a while trying to make it neat and tidy :)

I am not sure about the rift quality setting - I started at 80% but have not explored all the options yet. System has only been up for a couple of days, so I need to run some more optimization to really get it running perfectly. I think you are probably right and I can crank it up higher.

Nice setup...

Though that drink next to it is just begging to be knocked over, get a small table or such that is separate from computer table, I have repaired way way too many systems of various liquid damages from situations like this...

* drive a hook in your ceiling directly above your sitting position, hang an adjustable transport belt to the hook, hang another hook from the belt and pass the DK2's cable through it. no more cable problems

* nail a small wood or plastic block to the wall behind your monitor, make a hole for a 6mm metal screw, buy one that is longer than the wooden block by half a cm, pass it through the hole in the wooden block from the downside and screw the positional tracker on the upper side of the block. You just removed any judder the positional tracker would produce by you maniacally wrangling your joystick. Additional benefit : you are now a tiny bit further away from the tracker, which increases the distance you can move horizontally and vertically.

* do something to your Saitek so that doesn't slide around while you fly in HazRes. This might involve drilling through your table though.

* remove at least half the ice cubes from that smegging glass.

otherwise: nice setup :)

PS: I can provide photos for all points if you don't get what I mean.

Agreed... If you can "float" the DK2's cable it makes for a much better experience :) I run mine through the holes in the headrest of my sport seat and it feels like there is no cable at all.

Minor Update....

After three hours intense play, CPU Core temp. was 49 degC and my GPU 62 degC. Not bad!! May have to OC a little more :)

I will go ahead and fix the Rift Positional Tracker to the wall - that's a pretty neat idea.

Cable right now does not bother me too much, so I will see how that goes over the next few months.

Thanks for the suggestions! ICE FOREVER! ;)
