Performance issues Resolved!

I am not (as you will soon learn) very good with computers and I'm sure you are all way too clever to have this problem, but just in case......

I had serious issues running ED which developed right after I updated to 1.3. The game stuttered so much it was quite unplayable and I gave up thinking the game had out grown my 5 year old pc. (The connection of this problem to 1.3 turned out to be a coincidence).

To cut a long story short, my issue was heat. I checked the cpu temperature and it was 94 degrees. Thinking this was a tad hot, I read it should be closer to 60 and that when the cores get too hot, they slow down to protect themselves (good job or they would now be dead) - hence the poor performance.

I opened the PC up, cleaned all of the fans, cleaned out all the dust, cleaned the filter on the air intake that was 100% blocked with dust and put a bigger cpu heatsink/fan on for good measure.

My cpu cores are now about 45 degrees and ED runs brilliantly again at 60fps.

Happy days!

You should be doing this every month.
Most PCs are unloved.:(
Ask any developer, like ED devs, when they last cleaned inside their PCs!

I had a similar issue a while back, but it was my vid card over heating. a gtx 560. What a pain in the butt :) I talked my leading commander (wife) into letting me upgrade. She told me to get the GTX980 and that solved all my problems (well many of them :) I have a great governing body (someday), if I could only talk her into over heating in the sleeping quarters, now that would be a real win.

Hello OP,

Clearly not bad a cmputers - any idea how to get Windows 8.1 to tell me the CPU temp?
I know how to do this o LINUX - honest.

There are a few little programs which you can have running in the background. I use one called coretemp which sits in the tray and gives a realtime temp. I am overclocked, 8 core amd processor which is watercooled and never get a temperature over 34C with Elite running.

Temperature is always a good thing to check with pc problems. I try and have a clean up of the fans about every 2 months and that works well for me.

yep, always a good idea to de dust your rig once in a while, also if you're in a particularly dusty environment it's a good idea to get filters for the intake fan grills, i always get mine from DEMCiflex, makes a massive difference.

Cleaning goes for laptops as well - the last dell work one I had needed to be cleaned every month or so else otherwise the fans would run continously.

Take the back off and use compressed air to squirt out the dirt.
