i have a relatively old pc and sometimes struggle to run the game at a constant 60fps. over the past few weeks i have fiddled a bit with the config.
to modify the settings i recommend the following:
go to your game directory: "...\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1002"
copy the file:
"GraphicsConfiguration.xml"
go to: "C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
paste the file and rename it to:
"GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml"
this file will override any settings in your configuration file.
now open the file with a text editor. unfortunately most of the settings do not affect performance massively. however, you can fiddle with some:
go to the <planet> section and edit the following:
<TextureSize>512</TextureSize>
<AtmosphereSteps>4</AtmosphereSteps>
<CloudsEnabled>true</CloudsEnabled>
<WorkPerFrame>64</WorkPerFrame>
put this to all the settings (low - ultra). when you do this, the planet textures are a bit lower res and load a little slower, so you get less hitches. with this you can still put the environment quality in the game on high. so, the galaxy background texture is nice and crisp but the planets are a bit lower res. it's not very noticeable though.
another thing is actually an aesthetic choice.
go to the <trails> section and edit the following:
<EnableHyperspaceTrails>0</EnableHyperspaceTrails>
put this to 0 to all quality settings like above (low - ultra). this should remove the trails behind ships in supercruise when you are really close to them. i personally don't like those and after a short test it seems to actually disable the trails.
one last thing is the shadow resolution. go to the shadows section and edit the following:
<SliceSize>512</SliceSize>
you can experiment with this number. higher=better quality. possible values are 512, 1024, etc.
as i said in the beginning, most of the settings don't affect performance drastically but it's something. it's also nice to be able to change some of the aesthetics via config without sacrificing the quality.
if you have other tips to improve performance, plz let me know.
