Peripheral distortion on multi monitor systems and other strange anomalies.

I did a thread search and only came up with one covering "windowed game mode" so I apologize if this has already been hashed out.

Regarding the side monitors in multi monitor systems: I understand the desire to try and simulate the distortion in those side monitors (i.e. objects elongated to try and simulate speed or canopy distortion or, whatever) that occurs from objects in the peripheral of real vision but, why? Giving that those monitors ARE in your peripheral, the effect happens naturally. Not to mention if you do turn your head to look out a side window, you are now forced to perceive the image as simulated "peripheral" when it is anything but. If they are trying to prepare for Oculus Rift implementation, the same argument holds true. So again, why? I have yet so see another game flight sim that does this, let alone any real certified sim. Not that this needs to be "real" just, it is annoying looking out a side window only to see an image from an amusement park funny mirror.

Also, another discussion loosely on the same theme: The star field, why? I understand the need to try and simulate the perception of speed, especially when the perception of relatively motion is greatly needed while flying near other objects but, with the very clever invention of those speed" bars" in the HUD covering all axis of flight, I think the star field is obsolete. Not to mention it makes acquiring outside objects a chore, it can drive one nuts with those whizzing stars greatly increasing the amount of visual noise in your peripheral and, its just not realistic.

Any one else with thoughts on this?

Amazing game nonetheless, cant stop playing it even with the great limits in this early stage

Evidently the extremely-elongated side monitors on triple-monitor setups has been fixed in the latest alpha version. Are you in the Premium Beta? The premium beta currently only has access to an old Alpha build that had the stretching issue

This is incorrect. Or at least, not in the released 3.4 Alpha.

I am. Looking for that thread now. Thank you for the information.

From Ben the Graphics Guy:

While obviously wraparound support would be superior, do bear in mind that if you put your head at the "camera position" and set the FOV correctly, the side stretching should exactly cancel out the foreshortening effect you get from the outside edges of the monitor being at an angle to you.
Admittedly this means you're using a lot of pixels to fill a fairly small segment of your visual field.

This is a general issue with a tripleheaded/multi-setup do to with the field of view. So at the extremes of the screens objects warp and appear larger than they actually are.

It happens in all games pretty much, it's not an E: D thing.

It's also irrelevant by and large - you focus on the middle monitor, the others just fill in the picture to give you better peripheral vision - you don't fly along looking at the far left or right of a 3 screen setup.

The 'space dust' is a bit of a personal bug bear, but the devs have said that a request for a option to reduce/turn off the streaks has been submitted.

Space dust and White Streaks
Having a slider to lower or disable the white streaks is fine and I shall put a request in for it. However the actually particulates and dust is another matter.

Hasn't turned up yet, but fingers crossed.

If you want an idea of what an absence of space dust would look like in E: D, have a look here:

It's a glitchy Alpha 2.01 "empty" scenario without any of the space sparklies or white streaks, and looks loads better imho!

The effect isn't down to a desire to simulate the distortion but more a side effect of the bending of the field of view arc on to what is a flat view from the three monitors used.

Cause the programmers can't know what angle you have your side monitors set up at and the normal way is to have them more or less flat ( mine are only 20 degrees offset from the middle one ).

What your looking for is having the three monitors with an angle of something like 45 degrees to each other or greater. Which this would reduce the stretching of the side views it would cause a break of the view between each of the monitors.

As the other posters have said you spend most of your time only really looking at the middle screen. until someone makes a 48x9 curved monitor screen you're not going to have a fix for this unless you get something like the oculus rift.
