Perma death mode.

I am assuming everyone knows what I mean by perma death, after death your player/character/ship is lost. I am wondering about people’s veiws on this.
I have seen this mode work well in other games, as a additional save, and would be a separate mode from the options of open, solo, private, and be a separate instance obviously.
This game mode would be a very nice challenge in my opinion, where every jump, planet landing or ship engagement could be a very adrenaline fuelled event, one mistake and hours of work could be lost. Especially given a multicrew setting. I am not at all saying that elite is to forgiving as I am aware it has to balance for numerous player types. I see this as possibly the ultimate elite status achievement, to make it all the way to elite in perma death mode.

Ironman mode has been discussed multiple times.

General consenus is that it doesn't fit well with the Open/Group/Solo model and that it's easier to simply reset your save after every death.

Someone will link to the 'Pilot Ejection Table' which allows you to roll a die to determine the outcome of any ship destruction event.

Ahhh Ironman. Way back in the sands of time there was going to be an ironman mode. I think it was mentioned in the Kickstarter in fact. Sadly for those who wanted such a thing it was left on the cutting floor...<sighs wistfully>

I think it's reasonable for the game to offer a few levels of ironman choices, I don't think it would be all that popular a game if a particular ruleset were forced on every player though.

So the way I see it, every rebuy screen offers you the opportunity to play with no insurance - if you lose your ship always choose the freewinder option. For a more severe form of self punishment reset your save on ship destruction.

I like mossfoot's Pilot Ejection Table, although I've never used it, I use my own (much simpler) rules generally based around time. If I lose a ship I may not play again for a week, say.

Not really sure what could be added to the game to give more flexible (self-imposed) punishment than we already have though.

Thanks for your opinions, I wasn’t aware of the Ironman mode being a previous thing, it’s a shame that it never made it into the game. Self imposed perma death is good, if you have will power, lol. The roll of a dice or possibly a flip of a coin sounds a good place for me to start. Many thanks
