The taxi service has reminded everybody how slow travel is. Personally I like the pace of things, but if you're a new player mostly interested in on-foot stuff then having to wait 10-20 minutes to actually play seems like a bit of a design no-no.
What if:
There's an upgrade or alternate FSD drive that allows instantaneous jumps from body to body rather than system to system. But it's heavily permit-locked per system and players must win favour with factions, complete special missions or otherwise perform tasks to get their own ship permit in each system. Once you've got the permit you keep it and can jump between bodies in the system. So this speeds things up in home systems or places a player visits a lot.
Taxis and dropships have this permit by default for convenience (new players can get to their mission in seconds rather than fractions of an hour).
If you have the permit for another system you can also jump between those systems up to a maximum distance.
This gives players reason to stick around in a system to win favour.
And it protects experienced local traders from pirates and bounty hunters.
Lore: perhaps the system emits lots of radiation or something so it's limited to a select few favoured customers. Not just anybody can have it. Maybe it's VERY difficult to get.
