Watching the latest Wonders of the galaxy video, and I was blown away by the images of the capital ship crashing through a ring system (url below should take you right to that part). Which piqued my curiosity about the permanence of ring system damage, and resource exhaustion.
Are we to expect that within the first year that heavy metal ring systems would be 'mined out' or their capacity diminished? Is this even calculated similar to starport resource availability?
Also, in the event of a large scale ring system disturbance like the one pictured in this video (at the 3:01 mark), is that going to be permanent? Semi permanent? I would assume that these ring systems are relatively delicate formations that hav taken thousands of years to form just so, and without a rapid renewal process they should show wear and tear like tracks in virgin snow.
