Horizons Petition to overhaul the cobra mk.4

Currently, it's sub-par that most people can't or won't use even compared to ships its size, ships that are cheaper and better in *almost* every way.

We should make it non-exclusive, or make a non-exclusive variant, buff it, make it comparable in iteration to the viper mk 3 vs viper mk 4.

I would love to fly a good iteration of the cobra 3. I know MANY people would.

i have no problem opening the ship up to everyone, i am not a fan of unique ships for the special people (note I have one)

but that being said, the cobra is such an iconic ship in Elite lore and imo it was a faux pas to ever make the MK IV, a ship that many have fantasied over since 1984 locked down to a smally number of players and making it essentially a variant of the MKIII.

imo FD should rebrand the current MKIV the MK IIIB or some such, keep/remove its exclusivity, i do not care, and then release a REAL Cobra MKIV with all the love and attention to detail that THE iconic line of ships in the Elite franchise deserves.

I have to admit, sometimes I feel that the devs, whilst talented and all, do not really have much interest in thinking about the lore of the past Elite games... which surprises me really given what a stickler Michael Brookes was apparently when it came to being canon in the books.... Michael knows his onions no doubt when it comes to the Elite Story, so why the game is not tighter to its history, TBH I am not sure.......

I'm sure it will serve some important purpose further down the road. Personally I want to see the original Cowell & McGrath version of the Mk.3 make a comeback. Imagine it being the same speed as the Delacy version, but with the weight as a T6, coupled with the manuvereabilty of a DBS :D

The Cobra Mk4 is an awesome multi-role ship. Internal space in abundance and segmented in many small(ish) compartements - so very flexible to outfit.
The 5 hardpoints are perfectly placed and even if the power distributor isn't able to sustain all with energy weapons, 2 medium multi-cannons and 3 small gimbaled burst lasers are very capable to defend the cargo.

The ship isn't a fighter, that is true. But it was never supposed to be one!
It is a well armed trader/mission runner and it is really good in this role - especially, for its price.

Personally, I don't care if its mark number is 2 or 3b or 4. It is a fine ship. Just leave it alone!

I kind of like it as is.

That being said, 200m/s and around 300m/s boost speed with A rated thrusters (no dirty drives) is awefully slow compared to everything else.

On the plus side, with A rated thrusters, 4 pips to engines, and landing gear deployed, it does 99m/s. So at least I'll never get busted for speeding inside a station.

I wouldn't mind seeing two things revisited on both the Viper Mk.IV and the Cobra Mk.IV :

Class 4 Distributor
Rationale :
- Cobra Mk.IV often can't make use of its 5th hardpoint, as the Class 3 Distributor acts as a harsh and tight limiter on its firepower
- Viper Mk.IV suffers similar, being advertised as a "Heavy Fighter", running essentially a Cobra/Viper Mk. III Distributor holds it back (otherwise is have the Power to run quite potent Weapons).

Increase agility and stock speeds by one notch.
Rationale :
- Cobra Mk.IV arguably wasn't expected to be on par with the fast Mk.III ... but it suffered a tad too much, thus being quickly branded the "Slobra"
- Viper Mk.IV can do alot of things... except turn. Its agilty is at best painful and almost a disgrace to anything that calls itself "Fighter". The limited speed would be tolerable, if not for its surprisingly poor agility that comes along with it.

----------------------------
Both Ships have interesting features and I own both as I found a niche for them.
Flying both of them , however, always feels very limited.

IMHO they're not missing a whole lot. But that little edge that sets them apart from their Mk.III Models... that's what I'm missing. Technically that edge would be there already, if not held back by other factors like above.

The cobra 4 is fine as it is. It makes a fine small cargo ship or a hull tank

Disagree. The Viper mk4 can be considered a bit too good in the right hands. They are a pain in the asp to take down with proper outfitting.

I agree with what others have said about the speed. Even in classic Elite the Cobra was one of the fastest ships in the game, with only the Viper and FDL able to outrun it IIRC. Crippling the engines on the MkIV was bordering on a criminal act IMO.

But in every other respect I rather like it. It's compact, cheap, has a very versatile set of internal compartments and decent utility slots. Weapons are relatively weak but placement is perfect. I just wish it could run a bit faster because, despite the number of NPCs you see flying it, it's no dogfighter.

I do not have an issue with the ship itself and do have one in my fleet...... it's just not a cobra imo a bit like if I bought an Aston Martin and it's top speed be 90mph

Fine as it is..

Have one, use it and love it as is. They want to make it better? Whatever, I'll gladly accept a faster one but the fact is it's a good and useful ship.

If we're talking about the fixing of useless ships...can we revamp the Viper MKIV, the T7, the Asp Scout and the keelback at the same time?

i can think of 2 viable solutions regarding the Cobra mk4:

1: make it accessible to everyone, and buff it a little (a little more speed is enough)
or
2: give it a small advantage for tourism missions to give it a decent role to counter its overall bad stats.
