"phantom ring" around LHS 2158 - planet 4?

Hey all, hardcore explorer here. It's my personal goal to DSS everything in every system I enter along my way to... anywhere I decide to go.

So far there are only 2 exceptions to this rule: Tionisla 9 C-ring (too far out to actually hit with a probe) and now LHS 2158 4 B-ring (Cant actually find the damn ring -- and probably too far out also.)

Can anyone willing to take a peek please confirm if they can or cant actually encounter LHS 2158 4 B-ring? I submitted a bug report because i'm pretty sure at this point it actually just... didn't spawn in. But any digging on the part of the community would be appreciated!!

EDIT 2: It's not a ringed body for me.. It does have a Med CZ in orbit though. Nice try?

You've linked the first moon, they're talking about the gas giant it's orbiting. Two rings according to EDSM.

Tionisla 9 C isn't a ringed body, 9 D is though..

They're not talking about moon 9C, but the C-ring of planet 9.

The game can generate occasional outer rings which are extremely sparse and have a large gap between the inner and outer rings. Looking at the EDSM data, this is what has happened here:

LHS 2158 4 A Ring Icy 1,492,200,000,000 Mt 122,080 km 334,720 km
LHS 2158 4 B Ring Icy 111,710,000,000 Mt 2,820,300 km 7,106,800 km
So the inner ring has a density of 4.6 tonnes per square metre of cross section. Ice has a density of approximately 1 tonne / cubic metre, so that's an equivalent of a solid sheet 4.6 metres deep. Broken up into individual asteroids with space between them, that's plenty of asteroids.

The outer ring, on the other hand, has a density of just under 1 kilogram per square metre of cross section, equivalent to a solid sheet about a millimetre thick. Broken up into bits, that's barely distinguishable from empty space, and not really visible. Certainly there's not going to be anything large enough to mine in it.

Occasionally Frontier try making these faint outer rings more apparent ... which leads to people getting whacked out of supercruise by an invisible ring, a load of bug reports, and a return to them being intangible as well. (If you do manage to drop out into normal space exactly right, you should see some non-asteroid effects there)

Very rarely these outer rings have enough mass in them to actually be visible - if fairly sparse on actual asteroids - and those can be pretty impressive.
 
Ah, so it is, in fact, a phantom ring then (more or less). I was most interested in trying to nail it with a probe... but it seems likely that whatever sliver of a ring is out there is well beyond range. I tried firing blindly from the far side of the region around the outermost moon, but got no hits after about 50 shots spread across about a 10-degree arc as close to the lunar plane as I could manage.

Mildly amusing that people have had problems smacking into this kind of ring in the past, but I can't seem to do it even trying very hard in this case. I went back and forth across the region where it's supposed to be -- zipping up and down over the lunar plane -- and... nada.

So... Yeah, idk what the story is here. Hopefully someday frontier will get over their hand-holding of players and put in an 'advanced' option for "i know what i'm doing, just let me fire a damn probe" situations -- just like the non-arcade physics zero-G flight option. Until then, I guess I just have to move on. :(
 
Still can't find either of them.. Guess they must be ghosts.
The two ring systems I referred to are as follows:

The 3rd Ring system around Tionisla 9 (A.K.A. the C-ring)
-- {EDSM for Tionisla 9}

The 2nd Ring system around LHS 2158 4 (A.K.A. the B-ring)
-- {EDSM for LHS 2158 4}

I hope this helps you focus your efforts.
 
Plenty of them around, they are actually there, but the size and distribution of the particles make them invisible to the naked eye. Sometimes they are actually dense enough to pull you out of SC, here's an example of me sitting mass locked in an otherwise invisible ring, I have circled one of the rocks that make up the ring, that's as large as they get and if you try to approach them they just move around behind the ship.
