[Phishing ?] Suspicious mail allegedly sent by FD

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this is old news but I just got a weird email from FD :
I did a quick search on Google but did not find anything conclusive. Anyone got this too ? Is it genuine ?
Here is the text :

Greetings Commander,

Upcoming changes in privacy laws will soon give you more control over how your data is used, and we want to make sure you are happy to continue to receive emails about game news, updates and offers from Frontier Developments.

Our newsletters are a great way to keep up to date with what's happening in the galaxy, from major announcements to exciting community initiatives which bring together thousands of Commanders, at any one time, to blaze new trails together.

Please take a moment to complete our super-simple sign up form in order to continue receiving emailed newsletters from us.
We understand that completing an email sign up form isn’t quite as exciting as being hyperdicted by a Thargoid Medusa or completing that final run to rank up that extra tier in a Community Goal, so we’re giving everyone who completes the form a free decal and Anaconda Paint Job, just for signing up! It’s our way of saying thank you for being a part of this very awesome community. Please sign up by 24 May to be eligible for these in-game items.

These digital goodies will be delivered straight into your account once our Q4 update goes live.

It's a bad habit that FD have. I moaned when they did something similar in the past.

It's so simple to remove the risk too.

Aps.

I don't understand why they always fail to create legit looking emails.

I don't understand why those that complain about these mails only do a poor investigation to support their premise that they are dodgy. There's a different between dodgy and amateur, and a proper investigation of the emails does not point to them being dodgy...

It's to do with new GDPR legislation coming into force in the UK. Essentially, you have to re-sign up to receive marketing materials. Lots of places will be doing this as the law comes into effect on May 1st.

The first thing I did when I received the mail was looking at the forums and I spotted the announcement immediately. The thing is, when I receive mails from other companies I don't need to visit their forums in order to find out they are legal.

PS
To clarify:
Why do they use such a stupid subject? "Important information about your subscription"? That already sounds fishy. Why don't they use the same formatting they use for newsletters? Every idiot knows about corporate design but Frontier never heard of it. Why do they send their newsletters via newsletters(at)email-frontier.co.uk and the mail about the newsletters via newsletters(at)email-elitedangerous.com? Why is the signature completely different?

And we just had a few threads about their inability to write a proper email one or two weeks ago with much advice on how to do it better. They have lots of community managers. Allegedly there are regulary ~30 Frontier employees reading the forums. Why is not a single one of them able to understand the art of not looking like a nigerian prince?

And yes, it's not a big issue, no drama and absolutely unimportant. But it's also pretty easy to get right.

Even if it wasn't legit .... would it have counted as phishing?

It is sent to your email address and asks you to confirm your email address. It doesn't ask for login details, or your phone, or pet's middle name .... or anything !

25th of May

Every company which process EU citizens data has to obtain active consent from each subject (you) and inform them what the data is used for and the subject's rights. We'll all be getting a LOT of these types of emails, well those of us who are EU citizens will be. Be sensible though and you're right to question the authenticity of these emails, there will be a shed load of spam / malicious GDPR emails doing the rounds so careful what you click.
