Annoyed
I'm also annoyed by this decision. I had preordered this the first chance I had as a physical copy, as a big JP fan it's the type of game I wanted on my shelf. I'm not anti digital (200+ games on steam) but I am against not having a choice. All of the promotion I've seen for the game clearly says June 12th. I had to read about the July 3rd date for physical on gaming sites, after gamestop told me they didn't have my preorder today.
I don't like that movies release weeks ahead of time on digital, and I hate that games seem to be doing the same now. Two release dates is just silly. Almost an entire month til physical release is an absurd amount of time as well. Most games are having a 10% off (or more) sale on steam/gog by that time. It's certainly not new at that point.
I was incredibly excited to play this game day one, but now it'll be a month old by the time my "new" copy would be released. I'd heard great things about Frontier from friends who enjoyed Planet Coaster so I didn't even hesitate on this game. Shame on me for breaking down and preordering I guess.
While I am sure digital sales are easier and higher profit, by staggering the release like this you've lost at least one full retail purchase and instead are supporting gamestops pre-owned business, which I'm sure was the opposite intent. I've cancelled my preorder and will now instead be waiting on a pre-owned copy for my ps4.
I don't expect much done here, I know I'm likely the minority at this point. I know these trends will continue, and eventually I'll likely not be able to get any physical games. At least at that point we'll be back to just one release date. However I felt the need to express my disappointment because I was looking forward to the game very much.
