Newcomer / Intro Picked up a Type-9 Heavy Jumpstart, how do effectively defend?

So I picked up a Type-9 Heavy Jumpstart while it was on sale. My impressions were that it can withstand an interdiction and potentially destroy pirate, my first attempt merely lead me to having to escape as usual. Any tips? Is it worth actually engaging in combat when interdicted?

I've hauled a lot in a Type-9. In my view absolutely not worth fighting back, shrug it off and continue on your way. Maybe combat is possible but even with mines and turrets I couldn't do anything than waste valuable hauling time (which it is very good at)

Thanks. Yeah I was thinking the same, I was considering fighting back as the ship has a number of defensive points as well as lasers and torpedos.

Should I loose the hard points that came with the ship then?
Possibly, it depends how comfortable you feel without them.

Although they improved it a lot years ago the T9 is not a good ship in a fight, build it tough so it can survive to jump out and consider adding an SLF and pilot to distract the attacker.

With some practice and careful throttle control it is possible to escape from the interdiction while in cruise but it can be a long job.
If you win you won’t see that NPC again but if you lose it will take much longer to cooldown and jump again.

Though some do i would not use weps mines or anything to subtract the jump range.
Submit & high wake. It's unlikely you'll be masslocked. But if that does happen & you opted for shieldless, it's game over hehe.
So a good small shield (prismatic size 5) is a bonus.
Going shieldess is risky. But losing a load & copping a rebuy might be acceptable if your hauling for colonisation.
I built a security outpost as soon as l was able. Having medium security helps as they buzz the pirate as soon as your attacked.

Thanks. I guess I'm a little disappointed because I thought it would be like "Oh, you want to interdict me, OK,..." and then make the pirate regret it. Not that I expected a combat hauler per se, just a reason for having hardpoints. Otherwise it's getting the job done for it's intended purpose of a big hauler. By the way, point defense is automated, no input needed from me?

Correct. It even works when landed, e.g. if you park a ship like the Diamondback Explorer next to Guardian ruins the point defence will take care of many missiles targeting your SRV. Not sure if something like a Type-9 can land close enough

Cool, good to know. Thanks.

If you want to fight interdicting NPCs in a T9, you have to engineer it to the brim. I came up with this build. It works, it can kill an Anaconda or two before running out of ammo. Not enough for defending against 4 waves on a cargo mission, but enough for regular interdictions during non-mission hauling.

Think of a T9 as cargo crates with a couple of small engines . The type 9 is the only ship in elite that was made just to do one job adequately ish. It's not fast enough it's jump range isnt huge, its shields and armour are okish . I love flying that hunk of junk.
