Newcomer / Intro Picking up an occupied escape pod

Simple; what am I supposed to do with it once I've rescued the unfortunate occupant. Couldn't find an in-game protocol...

(still playing in Solo mode)

Unfortunately there's nothing to do with them, other than sell them. Maybe someday we'll have missions to rescue them or something.

If you have a mission to go fetch it, you take it to wherever the mission says, which is usually the station where you accepted the mission.

I was told that you used to be able to sell them for a big markup in black markets - never tried that myself - I just pick then up and flog them in the commodities market of my next station.

I found an escape pod the same way not too long ago, and was also disappointed that there was no in-game protocol for rescues. I set course for the nearest starport and "sold" it there.

Personally, I think occupied escape pods should be handled through the authority contact. Like redeeming bounties or intel packages; hand in the escape pod and get a reward for returning their citizen. And if the occupant is a wanted criminal, maybe get a bounty on top of the rescue reward. Oh well, maybe someday.

Drop them into Sgr A* as a sacrifice to the Great Devourer Of Worlds, the Ultimate Reality, End Of All Things.

In a pinch, any black hole will do.

Ah ha .. burial at sea. I've dropped a few into a few Stars, seemed like thr 'right' thing to do. Ultimately yes, it would be cool to get an authority reward, unless they are a pirate lord or something .. so for now blackmarket.

Here's a funny (and true) story; I knew a lady now dead, who's old Great Aunt was on holiday in the US visiting relatives when she sadly died. After discussion it was decided to ship her home for burial so arrangements were made and the coffin placed in the village hall, so people could pay their respects and have a ham sandwich. When they opened the coffin though, inside they found a high ranking naval officer and captain, perfect in his brass buttons, blue uniform and sword by his side. He's now proudly buried, where she should have been, because there was nothing could be done. Great Aunt Bessie had already been buried at sea with full military honours!

:D

Just so as to illustrate why that is probably an urban myth - have a look at this regarding why the coffins would have been extremely hard to mix-up:

(Don't ask me why I knew about that.)

This has been discussed and lamented (along with general salvage) various times.

Basically the community wants to see more happen around salvage and how to legalise it and specifically with escape pods and what to do with them (other than selling the occupants into slavery or killing them).

Things like waking them up to ask them who they are and where they want to go (and with them potentially being wanted and hence you getting targeted); or taking them to a station where they could either reward you or spawn a mission requesting you to take them somewhere else, or the police recognising a wanted criminal and paying out a bounty for handing them in, etc etc etc.

The first time it happens, one sort of expects there to be a consequence to the decision to rescue someone - akin to the rules of the sea, when all mariners have a duty to rescue all in stress, regardless. Even a reputation boost, like a medal, or some recognition other than hard cash, evidence of your humanity to your fellow man and good manners. As far as the game is concerned, what's the point in having components which have no significance, other than a minor inconvenience?
Not surprised it has come up before, it's awkward...
