Engineers Picking up Materials with Colector Limpet = Limpet Dumb Suicide

Hello everyone,

So ive been testing out the collection of materials for engineers.

Basically what I've encountered is that around 3/5 times i send the basically now mandatory collector limpet to pick up materials they crash into the destroyed hull of the freshly killed ship. Has anybody else seen this?

I once at the beta did a post a idea suggesting o having a Magnetic-ish Scoop feature, i imagined this kind of thing would happen.

You are in a combat ship, big and slow, with reduced mobility and shield strength with every TONNE of cargo you pack. And every single Limpet weights a TONNE so ideally you want to have a few but not full. But with dumb suicide limpets you can just have 5 because 3/5 will die and early death.

My request is

FD please ad some sort of fix to this.

yesterday i ran out of limpets trying to see if they would not die :p
I moved around the wreck but ran out of those 5 pretty quickly *facepalm*

I get this too. Randomly a Limpet returns with cargo and just vanishes. I don't think it explodes into the hull - I'd expect a sound to acompany it if it were the case like how they just love to suicide into asteroids for a fragment.

My limpets are crashing into the debris . Basically wasting units and time. I havent had my limpets vanish after they deliver items unless you select the item you want picked up and they will basically self destruct T_T

IMHO its a mechanic, 3302 and we don't have reusable drones.........."MASSIVE TACTICAL FACEPALM" then again engineers in the elite universe are tinkerers and magicians lol

Not sure why, but it seem that when I target the commodity/materials the limpet goes and gets it, but then expires when it returns. However if I dont target anything, just position myself within range, the limpets get the stuff, dont expire when they return and go back out to get more.

If you have the cargo selected when you launch the limpet, it fetches that one piece and self destructs right after. Always been like this.

Make sure you don't have any selected when you launch your limpets. Once they are all flying, then and only then can you safely select your target.

.

I'd just experienced this phenomenon earlier and couldn't think why. After seeing your post, I actually remember that I used to know this, but forgot.

That is by design, they have always worked that way since they were introduced a year ago. If you target something specific, they only pick that item and then self destruct. If you have nothing targeted they will collect everything until they expire.
If you don't want what they are bring back, use the thrusters to get your ship to move as they return and the cargo will explode as it hits the moving ship. No damage to drone unless you are moving really fast (30 is fine). It will then go get something else.

In my case it is always the first limit that expires once it returns, every one after that seems to be fine.

You've probably targetted the material when you launch the limpet. For reasons I don't really get limpets launched after targets are one shot affairs.

I've had no real issues with limpets and materials. CZs are a material paradise, especially big fat T9s masquerading as War Elephants.

Edit: And *that's* what I get for not reading the entire thread. Posts above mine spell it out just fine. I'll leave this here as a testament to my shame.
