Formed in 2805 after the great surge in private ownership of smaller starships, the Pilots Federation acts as conduit for trade route information exchange between trusted pilots and provides the infrastructure for a mutual protection scheme against the scourge of interstellar pirates.
The Pilots Federation's zero tolerance policy of dishonourable behaviour amongst its members is enforced by a system of bounties automatically placed on the heads of transgressors.
There is a galaxy-wide respect for the badge, which, when achieved, is worn with pride by members.
The Pilots Federation has a 9-level "kill tally" Ranking System from Harmless through to the coveted Elite status, with similar Ranking Systems up to Elite for trading and exploration. You can become Elite any way you choose to play.
Since the early days of the Pilots Federation upcoming commanders have been sponsored such that they may start a career in the unforgiving stars. In the beginning though, the technology to see and interact with each other was limited. A breakthrough at the start of the 34th Century lifted that veil and for the first time commanders of the Pilots Federation began to see one another and interact directly. It was considered to be defining moment for the Galaxy.
But as with all technological advances it appears that humanity as always was not ready for it. A dark future threatens the Pilots Federation. The idea of dishonorable behavior is vanishing. Pilots are reporting an increase in meaningless ship destructions, sometimes at the hands of 'hacked' or faulty station sensors, but triggered by a rising 'few' candidates who regard honour with disdain. Even Piracy, long considered the bane of the Pilot's Federation, is suffering at the hands of these banal killers who specifically hunt down other Pilot Federation members and candidates.
In all the forums and bars of the inhabited Galaxy where these matters are discussed, pilots who recount these encounters are berated and scorned. Discussion on this matter often reduces to thinly veiled threats and curses. Many are reduced to sabotaging or hacking the very technology introduced to make the Galaxy a more communal place, retreating to the darkness from the time before, in an attempt to escape the scourge.
The authorities continue to act on this matter, but their attempts at stemming the tide make little difference as such pilots find new ways to inflict themselves on other pilots.
It's time the Pilot's Federation, and it's candidates, stood up and took on the ideals of this once proud organisation and unite. Even Pirates, formally the scourge of the galaxy, are invited to take up this call to walk proudly as brothers in arms to end this scourge before it takes over the Galaxy and everything turns to dust.
Unite, my brother pilots.
