"Pilots' Federation License revoked!", "Mission Failed!", "You've been fined!"...meh, okay... Wait holup whatnow?!

Here's a story about learning the ropes of ED the hard way...
(for context: I started playing ED only last weekend)

----
So yesterday I was just messing around, jumping from one system to another, on my way from Coelho Station (Matet) to Crown City (LHS 160) because according to Inara there was a profitable trade route from Crown City to Garan Settlement (Lopu Maris). Halfway through my journey I got a mission update and 3 of my missions had failed, also my Pilots' Federation License had been revoked and I was fined just over 2.000Cr for whatever reason.

And now I'm docked with my Adder at a station in AY Indi with no way to return to the safe Pilots' Federation District. My ranks are low, my ship outfitted with standard equipment and just half a mil Cr.
I feel like a lost ant desperately trying to survive in a world with huge deadly insects. I feel like I'm outmatched, outgunned and inexperienced in every way possible and leaving the station would result in certain d**th within minutes.

So where did I go wrong?

Well for starters, I didn't read up on ED lore enough from the Wiki. If I did then I would know that...

Once a novice pilot gains their first rank in Combat, Trade, or Exploration, they are offered a graduation mission that guides them to the systems outside the Pilots' Federation District, and the permit required to access the district is then permanently revoked.
(source: ED Wiki - Pilots' Federation District)

Yeah, I didn't get the graduation mission. And I don't think I even have the first rank in any of those 3 areas.

Second, an in-game warning would have been nice.
Something like COVAS telling me that I'm not yet allowed to jump to systems beyond PFD when you target such a system and hit the hyperspace button.

And for point gamma...how the h*ll did I ever think I was ready to explore the vast expanse of the universe after only 10 hours of flying in PFD?! facepalm

Anyway, my current predicament leaves me with 2 options:
a. Start over from scratch and do it the correct way.
2. Leave it as it is and start earning Cr. fast to get better ships and equipment.

At this point I'm leaning to option B, I just hope that my poorly outfitted ship won't be an easy target for pirates (PvE or PvP).

The PFD is actually extremely limiting. It is safe in that it prevents gankers with established accounts raiding the place but there is nothing wrong with being out of there. As long as you don't go to any hotspots (community goals, engineer bases - Deciat in particular, or whatever is the latest event's point of interest) you will likely remain unmolested. There is nothing wrong with going to those places just be prepared for it. Your opportunities for making CR are much better outside the PFD.

A large number of us didn't even have the PFD when the game started. We did fine.

Thanks, that's reassuring.

That wiki entry is wrong*, just complete nonsense really. There is no "graduation mission" - there is a lure-type mission to entice you out of the noob zone but you can just ignore it. You only lose your permit if you DOCK OUTSIDE THE ZONE after receiving one promotion. You can travel the whole galaxy and still not lose your permit if you don't actually dock outside the noob-zone systems.

* The wiki has been mucked up a lot by fandom since the takover in 2018 - I hate what they have done.

+1 to pointing out that mission is an enticement to begin your journey beyond the starter systems, it caught me out on an Alt account reset.

Start again if you wish but as metatheurgist says, most of us didn’t have the safe waters of the starter systems when we started playing…and were fine. You are about to embark on the finest hours Elite Dangerous has to offer - a vast Galaxy to explore, opportunities to discover and all of it new, daunting and exciting.

I’ve got over 6000 hours in game now and still love Elite and play almost daily but I’d love to get those first couple of hundred hours back. I‘ve restarted Alt accounts several times but once you have hundreds or thousands of hours of experience you never quiet get that first feeling back. What FDev have done with the new pilot experience is much improved from what it was when I started and I really like the Starter Systems set up - but the Galaxy, even just the Bubble, is where you’ll really earn your Pilots Federation wings.

Go forth Cmdr, bask in your learning process and enjoy every second ….. besides, stick with it long enough and you’ll start to see the glue and folds that hold it all together;)

Most of us older hands who write here started before there was a PFD/kiddie pool, at a time where half a mil credits was an achievment🙂. You can get credits (and missions) anywhere. Random NPC pirates will be matched to your level, non-random NPC pirates are matched to the mission level, and you only have yourself to blame if you let your greed guide you into accepting that 1 MCr. delivery mission rated "Tycoon"...

Player pirates are a different issue - real roleplay pirates are rare, but if you encounter them, you're safe as long as you follow the rules. Player killers, on the other hand, will kill you, no matter which level you are, unless you invested lots of training into PvP combat yourself (which incidentally involves dying - a lot). But they tend to aggregate in known hot spots (no fun in hanging around in an empty system, waiting for days for another player to show up).

You said you had an Adder and half a mil? I'd suggest somthing like this, then: https://s.orbis.zone/iv1-
You should be able to get all that stuff in Vardeman Gateway in Veroandi, 7.5 ly from your current system (check it out on https://eddb.io/station/3535). You're going to need at least two mil for the next step up - the glorious Cobra Mk.III. If you want to go into combat yourself, you have enough to buy ant outfit an Eagle or maybe a Viper.

Thanks, that's reassuring.

That's very lucky. The last thing you should want to do is stay in the loser zone. Now you can buy decent ships and modules and do all the interesting stuff.

Simple strategy is to find the nearest high resource extraction site and help the police kill a load of bad guys. Only shoot at the ships the police are already shooting, and none will shoot back at you because they prioritie the police. There are two exceotions to that. Gunships and Anacondas sometimes carry fighters that will get you from behind as soon as you open fire. In those cases put 4 pips to shields and wait until the mothership is nearly dead before opening fire or, if you check in your left panel right tab, you can check whether the ship does have a fighter. If it doesn't. you can fire straight away.

After 20 mins, you'll have enough to get a 2A FSD and 2A fuel scoop, then you can go anywhere and do anything, like pirate massacre missions that will be paying you megabucks in no time:

Don't worry I chose to play in just a sidewinder until I had 100Million Credits. Get to the Resource extraction sites and get following the system authority vessels and then (from a distance) shoot at anything they shoot at.

Oh for goodness sake…all this talk, I feel a reset coming on😁
I do it regularly in my alt account. i like to try all the different methods to race to a fleet carrier. The massacre missions are the most fun, but sometimes you have to waste a lot of time to find the right stuff for the Vulture. Robigo sight-seeing is the most consistent - maybe not so boring for a noob, especially as it involves a bit of planet scanning on the way out there. Trading or mining in a T9 is not far behind and quickest to start earning fast, but flying an unengineered one is just horrible. I think I give the win to the pirate massacre missions unless someone knows a better way.
