Today I went from dangerous to deadly and I decided to track the last 4% points of the progression, 96 to 100. This is a very small sample but a few things really stood out. All of the events took place in Barnard's Star 5 high extraction zone, solo play.
The ships I encountered were all mostly expert and above and of all types, from Sidewinders to Anacondas. I engaged all ships within striking distance but did look for high value ships. For those last 4% points I engaged the following:
Elite=7
Deadly=16
Dangerous=18
Master=15
Expert=4
Total=60
Plotting these points give a bell-shaped curve, likely not a coincidence and probably written into the game.
The other numbers that stood out were the total number of kills to gain a % point, these were as follows
96 to 97
15 kills
Elite=3
Deadly=2
Dangerous=5
Master=4
Expert=1
97 to 98
18 kills
Elite=0
Deadly=4
Dangerous=6
Master=7
Expert=1
98 to 99
14 kills
Elite=4
Deadly=3
Dangerous=5
Master=1
Expert=1
99 to 100
13 kills
Elite=0
Deadly=7
Dangerous=2
Master=3
Expert=1
The average number of kills per % point was 15, the lower kills/% point included a higher concentration of Elite and Deadly kills. I have observed that Elite ships are not that common and that in this sample they were roughly 12% of the ships encountered. Deadly, Dangerous and Master made up the bulk at roughly 82% of ships encountered. So if you were to project these figures to achieve Dangerous rank, the total number of successful combats would be from the average 1500+/- and could range from the high number (18) at 1800+/- to 1300+/- depending on the number of high rank ships you encounter. So you have a choice, kill everything in sight, take bounties or be selective and just engage Elites, however they may only make up 12% of the ships you encounter.
One other observation, every once in great while I have run into a ship that flies and fights not at all like the roughly 99% NPC's out there. A 3-wing Eagle flight, a Federal Gunship and an Eagle took out my FAS in short order in two instances, they appeared to be Elites. Then a lone Eagle I interdicted for an opposing power acted human-like and instead of the usual Kamikazi run, executed a perfect escape and boosted before I could close. Anyone else had similar experiences?
