Pimax 4k vs Reverb G1

I already have a Reverb G1, but was wondering about the Pimax mostly because of the FOV. I´m afraid about loosing graphic quality thou.

Anyone who has experimented both could share some experience?

Can't comment on Reverb but I moved from oculus CV1 to a Pimax 5k+ last year and haven't looked back since. To me the wider FOV make ALL the difference (I only use the medium setting as well) - vertical fov extends beyond peripheral vision when looking ahead and horizontal is still really wide. Have tweaked the resolution sliders slightly and in-game grafix all to set to ultra (turn shadows low tho) and x2.0 (no antialiasing). I get at least 80fps in stations/planets and min 100fps elsewhere (even cqc). Can read all in game text easily. Mostly it runs in the 100 to 120fps most of the time unless it gets busy but grafix still stunning!. (better than any of the 5 HMD's I've tried). No more 'snorkle-mask' effect for me. I use 9900k and 2080ti. May upgrade to 8kx pimax and 3090 this year to see if I can push it further -
I know some folks have dissed pimax but I've tried a lot of HMD's and Pimax is very scalable with the settings. I regret changing my kickstarter backing from 8K to 5k+ sometimes....

Keep G1 and wait, i think this year will be interesting.
Moving to anything less than 2160p as you have in G1 is noticable degradation. If you want to change for the FOV only the Pimax 8KX is the option, but i would still suggest to wait.
Maybe Index^2 with 2160p panels wil come?

As an alternative you can pick G2, but i switched from G1 to G2 - indeed the visuals are better but the FOV is only slightly bigger.

keep the G1, the pimax 4k is obsolete and they don't even support it via software anymore
the newer pimax headsets, the wide fov ones are very much a mixed bag, some people seem to love them however for me I could never get both eyes in the sweetspot, my ipd is 63 but when set to 63 or even down to 60 the lenses were not close enough for me to see clearly - I measured and at 60mm set the lenses were actually 68mm apart, I also found that the headset flopped about on my face unless I tightened it so tight that it physically hurt

I tried all the guides and even 3d printing extra face plates, headbands, different foam, everything and it just never worked right. On top of that the colours were so washed out and grey that it made games (especially frontier) look like playing in thick fog. I had a 5K+ and tried my friends 8KX and it was the same, he had the same problem and had to sell it on. It actually gave me headaches and when I took the headset off my eyes felt "wrong" for 30-60 minutes after.

On top of that I could never recommend buying direct from Pimax themselves as user support is basically non-existent, people wait 6 months for a new cable and then if that doesn't fix the issue, even though they logged it months previous they say "oh sorry your 1 year warranty is up, we can't help you" and they won't even fix the headset for a fee, so the whole thing is just a paperweight. I had tracking issues on my 5k+ and they blamed my base stations, but they worked fine with my vive, this also seems to be quite common and I've seen other people resort to using steam dongles to be able to use vive/steam controllers. They said they would teamview on to my PC to check the issue and just never did.

I now have a G2 and it is so much better in terms of colours and clarity its not even funny. I don't even miss the wide fov because I can actually see instead of feeling half blind.
The blacks are much better than other LCD headsets, like the Quest 2.

I have pimax 5kxr and it's OLED so no problems with colors and same high FOV / resolution as other 5k headsets.
very imerrsive!
I've also owned p4k and it was a nice starter VR HMD but the new 5k and up variants are far superior.

only thing I hate about the new Pimax vs 4k is SDE. oh well, can't have everything!

They no longer sell the XR, all their current headsets are very grey LCD panels

Hey KyoKushin, how's it going? Tell me, now you've experienced both the G1 and G2, if you can go back in time with hindsight, would you still buy G2 again or would you at least hesitate? I only care about visuals and everything I've read suggests it basically gives visuals like a G1 with ever so slightly better lenses and, slightly, better colours. However, as usual, I want to hear it from you. In the comparison TTL vids, half the time I couldn't have guessed which headset was which.

Hi, its fine, thanx!
The G2 - its better headset than G1 but its worth to change? Hard to say - if your IPD is out of 63mm then G2 will improve the experience, but if you have 63 mm as me - you will receive slightly better visuals, better audio and new controllers. At first i not liked them but at now i find them very comfortable and good to use - so they're OK.

A difference in overall is not a gamechanger, its like slight evolution, not revolution. Will i change again if i would back in time? Yes - but i got them finally around 550 eur (including amazon discount). At now G2 is around 700 eur and its hard to say its worth change or not from the G1. G1 is still good headset in my opinion.

If you change, surely you will be happy from new headset, new controllers, in overall spatial audio and comfort. Surely you will not regret it. But what if you not change? You will be happy also from G1 - at the and both headsets have same 2160p resolution.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. It sounds like a good upgrade but I guess it's not 700Eur better than our G1s.

Got both; PiMax 4K ancient garbage. HP Reverb is by far and away the best display consumer headset there is. Exactly as Simonsays err.. says.
If your happy with 117 degrees fov. Else 170 degrees with with a well set up pimax tops it. No snorkel vision here - just sayin.....

The 4k, which they were talking about, was Pimax's first headset, before the wide FOV ones. :7

So you are using the full FOV setting with your 5k+, in Elite? Are you using the FFR option to claw back a few fps from the wide-viewplane overhead, and if so: How do you find it? (/me does not yet have a VRS-capable graphics card).

(EDIT: Don't fret about the original p8k model, by the way: It's display panels turned out to be of what we might call a: "faux k", or: "checkerboarded" variety, which didn't really offer higher resolution than the p5k+. The p8kX, on the other hand... :7)

Love your motion rig, by the way! :)

Can't argue with that. It's like wearing ski googles, although I wouldn't sacrifice PPI for FOV now. That said, if I started with a wide FOV I'd be the same as you, I wouldn't want to give it up.

Yes - using FFR and sustaining between 80 to 120 fps in most Elite gaming situations. The eyetracker with its dynamic FR brought 'nothing to the party' so I ditched that for now.
Still considering the 8kX tho...... but need to get hands on a 3090 really to push the boundaries.
Thanks for the comments about the flight Simulator. Moving in 6 directions while in VR with near edge-to-edge vision is get-wrenchingly realistic (I even wear an RAF flight suit! ). It's by far the best thing I've ever built 😀 over 4000hrs in it so far.

How did you get FFR working in Elite? Whenever I try it renders one eye extremely low res.

I also own the Pimax 5K-XR and it is paired with a 1080 Ti but I am not very happy with this video card. What would you recommend? RTX 3080 or 6900XT? Thanks.
