Piracy - Am I doing it wrong?

Right now I am addicted to PvP piracy. When I tell a player to drop cargo, they know it's either no cargo or no life. I can't exactly say this to NPCs, however, and 4/5 times, they run away until I kill them, dropping no cargo, or they jump out. I've tried using limpets to barely any avail, and it's really hard to destroy a cargo hatch without killing the target.

Shoot the cargo hatch and use weapons with good armor penetration, there was some piracy thread earlier where the devs mentioned that good armor penetration weapons damage the internal components more.

While I don't really do pirating I usually end up with a cloud of canisters when bounty hunting etc. so if you focus on the hatch I'd imagine you get more and more often :)

Edit: I'm running with burst lasers and a multicannon at the moment and at least the burst lasers seem to have good armor penetration according to the outfitting stats ...

~ Target too wiggly for limpets? Destroy engines first, then fire limpets.
~ Better yet just target the Cargo hatch.
~ You don't want to needlessly kill your victims. A bounty restricts movement and cuts into profits if you need to clear it. It only costs 150cr for 'assault' cost effective piracy 4tw.
~ Make exceptions for Bounty hunters, active discouragement is key. Make them explode. Better yet disable their engines, crack their canopy and let them float off. No penalty from the resulting murder that way.
~ Target ships are going boom instead of their subsystems? Fly betterer!

I sympathize with the OP, I spent two weeks giving people cargo. turns out I was supposed to take cargo from them.

Where was the damn tutorial?
