Piracy scans....

I've never played as a pirate, nor dealt in stolen goods so I've no experience of this at all.

However, as a legitimate trader I find I'm scanned a hell of a lot by patrols.....like, as soon as I've hit the airlock...boom....scan! Or when approaching for docking....boom...scan!

So how do the pirates get around this? Is it still a case of shutting down your heat and gliding in from afar so they don't see you? Or has this evolved? Do pirates just avoid the main stations and use the outer reaching platforms.

Perhaps there could be a cargo bay shielding module later on that masks what you are really carrying and masquerades that module as something like a discovery scanner, and only scans performed at close range can penetrate it......this would mean you have to keep your distance from the patrols.....but not look like you're keeping your distance.....fly naturally, so to speak! ;-)

I'm very much in favor of a "smuggling compartment" of sorts, so my Cobra can be a legitimate Millenium Falcon, but unfortunatelly this is not (yet) implemented in the game.

As for pirates, smugglers and other wanted pilots: They can avoid the scan by running silent, as you suggested, or they dock so fast that the system authority can't complete the scan, before they passe the letterbox opening. Both methods have their risks, so I suppose a lot of those lawless indiviuals tend to dock at outposts, where I've yet to be scanned.

Perhaps a utility that slows down/scatters their scan so it takes longer, not necessarily blocking it completely......just to give you a little edge when trying to dock with illegal goods

speed dock. i never bother with silent running. just go full throttle and get yourself in like it's a lifeboat and you're on the titanic.

actually, it's not that hard. my motto is 'never not speed dock'

chaffs are supposed to stop scans in progress, but they only work against players right now.

I either dock at outposts, as I've never seen police there, or I dock fairly swiftly. Line it up quite far out and you can hit the letterbox fairly fast. I must've done this ~100 times, never been scanned successfully.

It takes some extra work but I typically fly out to 10K for a port, fly towards the entrance, and around 9K I'll switch to silent. Then I just drift along and make sure I've got docking rights. Then once I get inside I switch silent off, pump pips to systems, and then go for docking.

S I L E N T R U N N I N G !!
Cut off scans, hard to detect (but not impossible), can dock anywhere not just on outposts, bla bla bla ...
Underestimated feature, and very very very .. did i say VERY .. usefull.
