Ships Pirate Hunter Chieftain

Hello Commanders o7.

Looking for any guidance on this build. Looking to build a pirate/bounty hunter. Currently I am running into thermal overload with my lasers right now as well as heat issues. I appreciate any guidance y'all provide.

Thermal overload is a misleading message. It means your distributor isn't keeping up with your lasers weapon draw.

You can't be serious about making a combat ship with E thrusters. That's like making a rally car with a lawnmower engine. You're using gimbals which means target resolution matters but you have E grade sensors. Like going into a gun range with a blind fold. Just don't with the E grade gear.

Mmm, default hull for a combat ship.

You don't need that many PDTs, you have power to spare for more sheilds which are already lower with biweave.

The rest you can't really improve without engineering.

Thermal overload means your distro can't keep up. Keep 4 pips to WEP when firing, but it's more because of those beams. Change the beams to pulses and you immediately get 3x the Time to Drain WEP. You'll probably want to change the small MC to another pulse, which does then decrease TTD, but it's still higher than with two beams.

Guys, any other suggestions in weapons for PvE Chieftain?
3 Cytos, 3 MCs make a very efficient PvE ship blower upper. Try everything you can think of though, there are all sorts of fun combos with the Chieftain (and Challenger) hard points.
I've since gone from OC to SRB on everything for that build though, as range isn't really an issue since I'm usually trying to hug targets anyway and I'll take the extra heat over the extra PD draw.

Why no beams and all FC?
Provided you can get close and stay close to the target, frags are the single highest dps weapon in the game. The trick is positioning yourself to land all the pellets on the hull of the enemy ship. Against large ships with a lot of surface area to hit, there is really no faster way to melt shields and hull.

Beams are horribly inefficient but they do have the advantage of not needing ammo. I personally use fuel rails and dumbfire missiles but that's because I enjoy power plant sniping. I use this ship when I want clear high intensity conflict zones:

Weapons selection is really just personal preference. Against NPCs, pretty much any loadout will work. Try as many different loadouts as you can. You might be surprised at what you end up liking the most.

Happy hunting.
