Newcomer / Intro Pirate hunting missions (either they dont show up or are in groups too large for beginner)

I get attacked by the one off npc here and there (i play open, but players are rare in the vast universe). These guys aren't considered pirates though, even though they are effectively trying to pirate me. The missions i find for hunting pirates usually result in either no pirates to be found, just these one offs .. or they're in a large (>5) group. Since the mission is being made available to me, I would assume it is within reason of my experience, is this not the case?

They seem to give you like 4 hours to kill 5 pirates in a certain system, but the system is empty and I'm not wandering in an empty system for 4 hours hoping pirates show up. Is there some trick to these pirate missions I'm just not aware of?

As far as I know the missions aren´t scaled to your experience level but the same for all commanders and you should find the pirates in USS (unidentified signal sources) in the target system(s)

i have the same issue, best places to find pirates at least form what i seen are in those "unidentified signal source" locations that pop up randomly, i had a kill 4 pirates mission and all i did was farm these especially when you see its ships attacking a hauler, type6, exc... then they are for sure pirates. believe it or not you rarely find pirates just flying around, i just got a Eagle and have it set up for bounty hunting so that's all i do is hunt pirates/wanted ships usually though indirecting them but also from these USS (unidentified signal source) locations. if you want more help or talk you can add me in-game, ive been playing a few weeks now

I attempted one where I needed to kill 7 pirates. I managed to kill 8 ships with wanted status pulling them out of FSD and a couple of USS but the mission said i'd only killed 1 pirate. Does wanted equal pirate or are not all wanted pirates?

From what I've seen with uss's and being interdicted, solo ships who try to pirate me don't seem to be pirates even though they are doing the act of piracy. The other situation is groups too big for new players. I've been attempted to be pirated by npc's labeled as clean... Never seen one actually labeled a pirate, so how to prioritize who you take out for missions is not apparent.

Wont be able to play until this weekend as I'm on a week long business trip

Yes this happened to me too. I hung about a nav beacon and killed more wanted than my pirate quote needed.

This isn't 100% clear to me but a guy on here had a good tip. I've not tried it out yet though.

1. Carry a couple of tonnes of something nice in your cargo. Nothing you can't afford to lose though. Couple of golds or silvers or something.

2. Head to a nav beacon.

3. Fly around and wait for a wanted ship to scan you and then trash talk you about taking your cargo then opening fire on you.

4. He's most probably a pirate.

5. Kill him then check your tally.

My logic tells me that while as players we can all have a bounty and be wanted but we are not all pirates either. Some people may have a bounty because they never paid a fine. I transpose that logic to NPCs. Not all of the NPCs who are wanted attained that status due to piracy. Makes sense to me but I really don't know if that's right or not.

Anyone know if the detailed wanted scanner helps identify if they are wanted as a pirate or as a guy who didn't pay his parking ticket?

The warrant / wanted scanner should tell you if they are wanted for piracy vs other reasons. If it doesn't it should be a suggestion since piracy can be pretty subjective and these guys aren't flying around waving skull and cross bone flags.
