Pirate killing mission

I took on a pirate killing mission from the V401 Hydrae system. When I found the USS I was offered asked not to kill pirates and given a new mission, but I want to kill pirates so the only option I had was to abandon this new mission. However the old mission no longer exists.

This just sounds wrong. I would have attacked the person offering the new mission, but they were clean and I only kill wanted criminals. Now I still have the new mission in the list, but it only has a back option, what am I supposed to do now?

Every time I take on a pirate killing mission I'm offered an alternative to killing pirates and then I stop finding pirates. Can anyone confirm this? It's quite frustrating to play at the moment.
