Pirate Ship/Best Medium Fighter?

Commanders,

I'm thinking of building a small, fast, pirate ship, and something very good at combat.

I keep reading the FdL has the greatest fire-power of any medium ship, but is it still the best now the Kraits and Mamba have appeared?

I was in a Haz Res the other night and a Krait did quite the number to my ship despite it being a lone warrior. It was packing a punch that even the NPC Elite engineered Anacondas couldn't match.

I've yet to try a Krait, but they are seeming like a rather interesting ship for this kind of work. What are others thoughts?

Neither FDL nor Mamba is a good "pirate" because they lack internal space to get the pirate stuff like cargo and limpets.

Mamba is like FDL copy-paste except looks cooler, has centerline pilot seat achieves higher straight-line speed but at a cost to turning ratios.

From what I have heard Krait Mk2 should be the go-to medium pirate ship.

Krait Mk II with five efficient plasmas and phasing experimental is the best combat/piracy experience I've had in the game.

Do you just threaten and not disable the ships? Curious how you pirate using that set up. Or is plasma good for taking out modules?

In piracy firepower isn't most important thing. This isn't about blowing things up. I pirated in many ships, tested many of them during Borann mining rush, yet most money I made in the Imperial Clipper. Like this ship was created for it. Fast, intimidating, devastating ramming ability and good internals for the job.

I'd normally go for my favorite Swiss Army Knife, the Python, but for anything combat related where you need space and range and maneuverability, the Krait II wins, hands down for me. Don't be fooled by the very minor improvement in turn rate for the Krait over the Python, it's not enough to even notice, where the Krait really shines is in the maneuverability when using the lateral thrusters, engineered of course, combined with it's lower mass.

Clipper is great too...but sometimes bad to get a black market. And needs a lot of fuel...

Yea, the Clipper also was on my mind first of all. While needing a large pad, everything else about it says "medium ship". Quite good speed, good enough firepower for pirating, good shields and plenty of internals, allowing you to also make the hull rather durable while still being able to bring the tools needed for the job and make the hull a bit more durable in case something goes wrong.

While i don't pirate, i at some time earned my PP merits by rescuing slaves from the Kumos, which requires just the same tools as piracy and the Clipper did the job perfectly fine.

Also, if you plan to pirate outside of anarchy systems and thus will rack up bounties, the Clipper can do an acceptable job even non-engineered and you can clear the bounty by selling the ship and buying a new one. The Clipper is not that expensive, so you won't loose too much money when doing that.

If being able to land at a medium pad is absolutely required, it's really between Krait and Python. And while the Krait MK II is my absolute favourite combat ship by now, i'd actually pick the Python for piracy. You don't need the last point of firepower, agility and survivability when attacking freighters. You need internals instead, e.g. for hatch breakers and collectors, along with cargo space to actually bring home what you pirated. The Python has one C6 slot more, which really helps there.

I am not a career pirate but I have dabbled and the OP also stated very good at combat.
I know it's all down to personal choice but hit them with a few five plasma barrages and ask politely has done the trick for me in the past.

Choices...choices...

I'll try the Mk.2.

Does it have less payload than the Python? I thought it had more (or is that the Phantom)?

Is it worth engineering it to run cool, or is it already cool enough?

Two real options...

Viper mark 4.

Cobra mark 3.

Medkum is not small.

I favour the Viper, 32t of corrosive proof racking, good shields, range, speed, and all round kick ass.

Build here

Others prefer the Cobra.

Both damn fine small ships

it has more. It runs cool, because it has a huge powerplant and huge distributors...everything is huge in this ship...:)
