pirated by a pirate

Good morning CMDRs.
The other day I had my first experience being interdicted and robbed. I'm pretty upset about the experience.

The pirate was an indistinct name in a clipper. I was in a T6. I was completely outclassed in every way.

They interdicted me. I fought. I almost got out, but took a turn wrong and submitted because I didn't want to take the bits of damage from submission.
They told me to stop, which I did. I saw my FSD slowly cool off and get ready. Pirate told me to abandon 15 tons of cargo.
My cargo of the day was about 20t of basic medicines and about 75t of progenitor cells. I could drop the basic medicine.
No, not today thought I.
I had built my T6 for this scenario exactly. I know a clipper almost always gets gimbals due to the hardpoint placement. I spun up the FSD, boosted, threw pips into systems, and started dropping chaff. I can do this.
Cannons splashed off the starboard side shields. Good, no way those are fixed so I don't need to worry about those hitting often. Pulse lasers darted around my canopy, but I rarely got hit. The extra pips to systems should neutralize most of the incoming fire.
I didn't really consider mass blocking in this equation. The FSD was taking a lot longer than I thought it would.
Unfortunately, while I built my T6 for this event, I was not prepared mentally. Adrenaline was rushing through my body, and my flight or fight (flight) prevented me from thinking clearly. Between my SCBs and chaff and boosting and my FSD, I failed to consider my heat buildup.
By the time I did, I was hot. Very hot. I realized that there was no reason to boost (because of the double chaff setup) and that I was spending way too many SCBs with too much waste.
I stop the boosting and lay off the SCBs a bit. However, it was too late. Before I know it, my cargo hatch melts completely and cargo (mostly medicines) spill out. Happy, my pirate wishes me well as I jump into supercruise.

My first pirate experience, and I botched it. I BOTCHED IT!!
Next time I should flip over and hit them in the face with my railguns before spinning up.
Or, drop the cargo while dropping a bunch of mines. Really excited to do that in 1.3 when mines suck a little less.

Thanks for reading.

Haha, something similar happened to me too. T7 vs. Asp. The Asp is really nasty...it can masslock a surprising amount of ships. Anyway I boosted and boosted, and made it to SC severely damage..from overheating my ship! :)

Instead of trying to get back into supercruise, select a nearby star system and FSD to there - mass-lock does not affect your FSD drive if you're jumping to a new system.

OP - running is a viable option. Just because you didn't get it right the first time does not mean you should stop trying. As Genar-Hofoen said, select a nearby star system. That saves you a lot of time.

The only way to fight piracy is to starve them. Don't turn and fight. That gives them the advantage.

Or just give up your cargo? Pirates don't usually ask for much, doing what you just did is a one-way ticket to getting a limpet on your hatch and losing ALL your cargo instead of 20 tonnes.

Of course, traders will continue running and unnecessary damage and sadly deaths will continue to occur. Oh yeah, and if you dropped mines and shot me with a railgun, I just wouldn't bother to be honest and would just hatch break your hold.

You could have avoided quite a lot of losses just by giving up your cargo... The pirate only asked for 15 tons, that's very generous if you ask me.

Plus, you're lucky you ran into a clipper that relies on gimbaled. Some clipper users use turret and fixed, so maybe you want to be careful with that.

It's all about choice. And notice he does not blame the pirates.

If he thinks it's more exciting and fun that way then good for him. He probably was just not in the mood to feed freeloaders that day... :D

My conda brings all pirates to the yards and they're like, awww hell naw. Except for NPC sidewinders, like flies!

My rule#3 is to ALWAYS have a destination system selected as a Route (i.e. not a simple destination). That way you can tap "next system", then "engage FSD" and you're going straight to Hyperspace. But you did really well. The adrenaline when up against a real pirate is really tough to overcome. Any fight you walk away from is a good one, and it sounds like you were up against someone who was out to RP proper pirating. Neat story. :) A little rep might help for next time!

I play open all the time and done a couple of community goals, but have never been interdicted by a player pirate. Is it because I drive an ASP and they don't think it is worth the bother?

Good to see a trader using legitimate game mechanics to escape.

You might not be so lucky next time but I applaud you for taking the risk :)

Wow, you have managed to squeeze a whole lot into the old tin can! 100t cargo, plus shields, SCB and rail guns. That is quite some build :)

I think a lot of traders at that level struggle to balance any kind of defence against the draw of max cargo capacity.

Should of keeped to the first option and give him cargo...but your biggest mistake was taking a low jump...should of took a high jump to a different system you may have got away

I feel that; although you had a plan, to avoid having to give up cargo. You hesitated in your actions. By this I mean, 1st you fought the interdiction; fair enough, you thought you could win, but on finding you can't, you submitted. That was when; in my opinion, you became indecisive. If you had, planed your next move better, the whole thing would have been lees dramatic for you. However, this said, I have never commanded anything bigger than a Cobra and running is very easy in those craft, compared with the T9.

Nice to see, the basics of your plan, came together and it shows, that submission and death, are not the only options, for others in a similar situation.

Arry.

Forget the mines, they're useless.
You're in a Lakon. You need heat sinks.
And 4 pips to engines, not sys.
And buy a shield cell bank.

Who needs to breath when you have RAIL GUNS?

But you are absolutely right. A lot of traders are stupid, because they want MAX PROFITS at the cost of safety, then whine when their safety is put to the test (and fails).

Good stuff OP, brave decision to pit your T6 against the Clipper to try and outrun it. Sounds like you've got a good build and good to hear another trader is carrying SCBs, really can help make a difference and extend survival time. I may have missed it but if you've not got heat syncs and have a spare utility slot they can certainly take the edge off the added heat management.
