Pirates Cargo after being destroyed

Can someone please tell me how its picking up cargo from a pirate that attacked you is stolen cargo??

surely this should be spoils of war

basicly i was just heading back from mining in my sidewinder and i find a mk3 cobra fighting an anaconda i joined in hitting the mk3 coz it was wanted and it started dropping gold all over the shop
i pick up 1 canister which finnishes my cargo and head out get jumped by a fed ship who scans me and gives me a 9k fine coz i picked up cargo from a ship that was wanted......

seems a little silly to me

i would like to point out things found in a desert by nomad rules is finders keepers would love to see this rule apply out here

i appreciate that if someone forces a clean player or npc to drop cargo then it should be stolen but if u collect cargo from a wanted person or just the canisters floating in the middle of space it shouldnt be classed as stolen more like (Found) and if feds scan you they ask you to hand over your cargo with no fine, that way it gives your the choice to try and run or dump the cargo without a fine

He stole it from someone, hence it is stolen.
The fact that you stole it from him doesn't make it less stolen.
It still belongs to the first guy. :)

My guess is because it was stolen cargo to begin with.
Say someone steals a laptop from a store, then picks a fight with you. You beat them up, they drop the laptop and run. You pickup the laptop. You're now in possession of stolen goods.

Personally, I feel the feds should demand you drop the stolen cargo. Only if you don't comply do you get slapped with the fine.

How could anyone know it's stolen without some kind of transponder on it or name tag? If it has those, we should be able to return it for compensation.

Returning stolen goods to the rightful owner sounds like an awesome idea. :)
But I am afraid the game mechanics don't allow that and there is no owner register, within. Just at the moment the goods are stolen, they are tagged as stolen and that's it.

It would be cool if there was an award for "if found", perhaps at 1/4 of the total cost of the returned cargo. The benefit being that you would get a +rep in the faction that controls the area.
