Newcomer / Intro Pirates! I want to jack some cargo!

Good day good forumers!

So, I have been playing a couple of weeks, did some trading in an Adder, did some exploring in my hauler, been picking up bounties in my Viper, and now its time to try something else. So before I pack up my stuff and head for empire space, I would rather like to have a crack some traders in Federation space before I leave.

So, I have bought myself a Cobra, I have a 200~300k to buy some stuff for it, any advice on out-fitting would be received thankfully.

Furthermore, I have never interdicted a ship, or cargo scanned, or really.... have any idea how to snatch the loot!! so again... any advice welcome. I plan to pray on NPCs in Fed space, I'll not be picking on CMMDrs just yet Also, can I sell stolen booty at any station with a black market?

I had a first spin on interdicting a player or two yesterday. Ahem... now repairing the damage. Then again, I seemed to 'get lucky' interdicting an Asp who I suspect was trying to interdict me anyway, so he immediately gave in, we dropped from SC, and he pounded my Cobra while I was still spinning. Ouch. But made for a tense two or three minutes trying to get enough distance to SC out again, 50% hull, windshield cracking, etc.

Fitout. I have a Cobra. You'll need some guns. I go for gimballed pulse CLASS 2 (G2, I think but pack a punch, and with 4 pips to weapons they never overheat). I've never got to grips with cannon/multicannon, etc but I'm told they do better for hull/component damage once shields are down. So I don't pack other weapons.

Cargo scoop is standard.

You'll need a Frameshift Drive Interdictor, or you'll be left with hanging around Nav Beacons or trying USS. Higher rated have greater effective distance (I think).

You don't need a Kill Warrant Scanner because you're not necessarily going after 'wanteds' but it might be a bonus on any kills to increase bounty.

You will need a cargo scanner to see what's onboard. Or don't, and take pot luck.

You will likely need a cargo hatch breaker (can't recall proper title!) that fires limpet mines. If not you're reliant on a damaged NPC dropping the goods in an effort to get away.

Might want to upgrade shields and bulkheads.

Add some shield cell packs to help keep the shields up, BUT if you're picking on weaker ships (Haulers, Adders, Lakon 6, etc) then arguably none will have enough pop or manoeuverability to cause you serious damage.

Selling stolen goods. Yes, any black market but you have to be on the black market tab under 'contacts' not just the regular commodity market screen. Also, given the choice between a Starport and an Outpost I'd choose the latter as you won't get scanned for stolen goods (well, I've never been scanned at all going to Outposts; but I'm not saying it's universally true).

Cheers Capn' is it difficult to interdict ships? seems like I need to organise a lot of modules.

Just a quick update, pulled off my first heist! gathered in 4t of Imperial Slaves, and 1t Berylium.....other canisters I destroyed LOL, guess I can practice picking up cargo... good fun though I'll give it a bash in my local anarchy system later. If I tool up the cobra ( like my viper) I might be able to bounty hunt and operate as a pirate, that sounds like a good crack to me. Only thing was my 'black market contact' seemed to have abandoned his post....do they sometimes do that?
