Pirates (non-npc)

So is pirating other players an option in this game? If so, is it viable or is there too many "cops" around to even take part?

Is it even profitable?

I think in terms of gameplay I think it might be fun and interesting. From what I read elsewhere its not very profitable in terms of cash generation, as unless people submit and jettison cargo for you, you wont get much. How many "cops" there are depends on a few things, what security rating the system you are in has, the higher the quicker the response, if its anarchy, there will be no response. Also depends if the player you are attacking has report crimes on.

Another angle to piracy is playing a faction or doing Powerplay, so that it's not just piracy for the sake of looting. Then you're more like a privateer, though forces in that system will still treat you like a pirate.

Now I have a question to add to the mix - can pirates take hostages (passengers) instead of cargo?

No

Too bad. The lore definitely allows for it. Ransom would be a way to make real money as a pirate, especially if you grab VIPs.

Old Duck.... did u just regenerate into two persons?

That's my daughter Jenny! She just joined PSN today, so you might run into her out in the black ;)

ps - I'm speaking as Tom Sawyer, not Mark Twain (and I never speak as Samuel Clemens).

I would encourage you too follow your desires to pirate.
There are ways to make money and they're seldom much fun for long.
Piracy is likely to get some sort of attention from FD in the future.

I wrote this in another thread; but it applicable because you clearly don't understand the "pirate" role in ED. Note the bolded section.

Have you ever been Pirated by NPC and given Cargo and then let go on your way? - No, I just run
Have you been Pirated by a Player and given Cargo and then let go on your way? - No, that isn't how piracy works in ED. In ED piracy is nothing but "interdiction" "pew-pew" "eject - eject" there is no communication, there is no giving cargo. For that matter, the pirate ships couldn't carry any cargo, they are pure fighter role ships.
Have you tried Piracy without trying to kill the Ship and picked up Cargo? - No
What Cargo do you hope to find and what is it's value? - Never did it
Have you tried Piracy in Multicrew? - No
If any of the above what Mode do you Pirate in: SOLO/GROUP/OPEN? - n/a
Why did you try Piracy else would you like to? - n/a
Can you suggest how to improve this Role to become even more viable? - Viable? Why should playing the role of murdering psychopath be made more viable?

Player piracy depends on the players - a "true" pirate would interdict, then ask for cargo (and have a loadout that would suit this role) - that is, they would play the game. Unfortunately a lot of player pirates just want to fight, so interdict, fire until target is destroyed, or run away if it looks like they are losing.

This is why, when I played on the PC, I always played in Solo mode, or in private groups.

It would be great to have some real pirates in the PS4 universe. However as many other people have said, playing a pirate is hard work. Now I am no expert, but you need a good ship, and a ship that can do lots of different things (off the top of my head; cargo racks, scoop, firepower, defences, manifest scanner , etc.). You'll also need a keyboard as typing any messages into the in game chat with the DS4 will mean that your target will have disappeared by the time you have finished!

It's a real shame because a lot of people will hate and disparage you for being a pirate (and many traders will simply play in solo to avoid non-NPC pirates). Being a good pirate in the game is, IMHO, the hardest role to play and thus is one that deserves much respect. Also, as many people have mentioned and for the reasons outlined above, it's hard to make a profit. I think that's one of the reasons that people who were attracted to piracy get drawn into other roles which have a more negative effect in the Universe (and which are clearly not pirate roles).

Although you cannot take passengers as hostages, if you have a good crew you can take players as hostages. There was a very famous event where a pirate group took a fuel rat as hostage. Anecdotally everyone not involved in this exploded in salt, but the fuel rats and pirates involved had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it.

P.S. To the dude trying to make a point, it helps if you don't use grey text on a grey background. Even your bold loses its emphasis.

Interesting.... If I were to take, say, a leader of a faction hostage, surely his / her faction would "pay" to get their leader back. Or they will show up in force and blast me into space! I'm curious how that first hostage role-play took place, since the only way to pay a ransom is to dump cargo somewhere..

All hail king Monkey!! I would never take you hostage ;)

After reading about the fuel rat event I now think the highest form of honour is your buddies demanding payment from the captors to keep you hostage!
