Pirates that hunt me dont count towards my hunting pirates

Took a fairly simply job, hunt 2 pirates in a system, I go to the system, get one in a USS straight away, then get interdicted five times in a row, all by pirates, and even though I kill every one of them, I still have one more pirate to get.

Seems like all pirates should count, not just the ones in USS?

As far as I understand it, missions are set for the USS so you need to enter a USS to complete them.
It is similar to say killing bears in an MMO, not all bears count only the special 'quest' ones.
I presume the game mechanics are set to only recognise mission targets within the USS system.

Not correct. Killing wanted ships at a nav beacon can increment your target count, but not every one. Some may be wanted for parking fines!

I think interdictors should count, by definition they must be pirates. I have ticketed that as a bug.

i respectfully disagree; judging by the dialogue i've heard from my interdictors, they are more likely assassins than pirates

e.g. it's always something like "i'm going to end you!" and not "give me your cargo!"

They all specifically asked me what I was carrying, then asked me to give it to them, then opened fire.

To add insult to injury, after I tryped the first message that annoying thing happens where the guy shows up to offer you an alternative mission, so even the one pirate I already had went away.

You're right - I've had the same. Clearly Pirate comms messages asking what I'm carrying, then when they spot my dummy cargo, they open fire asking for it all. Kill them as they're clearly pirates, even KWS scan them so I get cash and they don't come off my total mission kill list

Have ticketed - could you do so too?

The way it should happen is as follows:
1. Kill four pirates
2. First USS gives you the option of an alternative. Take it or ignore it.
3. Other USS's have pirates. Ensure you have cargo, and wait for the "what are you carrying", wait for them to open fire and then attack. Your hits will be registered.
4. Kill the required number and return to base.

When it states kill 4 pirates, they are specific pirates in USS's. I did three of these last night. All sucessful. Any other pirates, eg interdiction do not count, as the mission is for "specific" pirates in USS's. The mission should be more specific, ie. kill groups of pirates in USS's.

I think this is an oversight on FD's part.

The missions send you to a named system to kill pirates. That's as specific as the briefing gets. Fair enough, so surely any/every pirate you kill in that system should count, regardless of whether you find them in a USS, whether they interdict you or you interdict them, whether you find them at a Nav beacon, a RES or someplace else...

If the briefing said "kill 4 pirates a unidintified signal sources in XXY system" that it would be different.

Note that I'm talking about NPCs who clearly behave as pirates here (i.e. they cargo scan you and then either demand your cargo or moan that you're not carrying any). I realise that not every NPC interdictor is a pirate - that's not the issue.
