Newcomer / Intro Pirates/Wanted/Reputation Questions

1. How do I tell if a wanted ship is considered a pirate? Someone mentioned pirate factions, but for a mission I was getting credit for killing wanted ships aligned with a faction called something Revolutionary Party.
1b. If it comes down to pirate factions, what indicates that a certain faction is a pirate faction?

2. If I kill a wanted ship working for a with a sub faction that's aligned with a galaxy faction (Lets say Alliance in this case) - Will I lose reputation with the Alliance OR the sub faction even if their wanted? Or does being wanted omit any reputation loss/gain?

3. Does turning in bounties have any effect on reputation gain/loss? And in what scenario does it?
Say I kill a wanted criminal that is aligned with Faction X and turn in the bounty;
Would I lose reputation with Faction X and gain reputation with Faction Y?
Or would I gain reputation with Faction X? Or does nothing happen as asked in question two?

Thanks!

I'm not sure there is a difference to be quite honest. The majority of the time a wanted independent ship is a pirate I guess.
Killing a wanted ship should raise your rep with the people that put a bounty on them (not sure if this has been fixed yet) but at the very least it won't make them mad. So in your example it should raise your rep with the sub faction and alliance. For some reason changes take a while to show up on the rep page, but it is registering.

If it's a bounty you should not lose rep with the faction of the player you hunt, and gain from the faction that pays you. However if you kill them in a system they do not have bounty in, that system will put a bounty on you and you will lose rep with them. So if an alliance faction hires you, and you kill the target in Fed space where they are clean, the feds will treat it as a murder. Anything goes in anarchy.

So just to clarify what you're saying before I start pulling the trigger on anyone.

Scenario: If I kill a WANTED ship that's working for a sub-faction called Alliance Assembly that is aligned with the Alliance, I will not lose reputation with the Assembly or the Alliance. And when I turn in the bounty, if game mechanics are working, I SHOULD gain reputation from the faction that put the bounty out.

I'm not sure but I think pirates have cargo bay scanners in their sub systems, bounty hunters have warrant scanners, and traders have bigger cargo bays. This is coming from a friend, but so far it's held true in my experience. makes hunting for pirates much easier.

Man, it sure is a lot of work before even engaging to determine if targets are appropriate or not. Me thinks this needs to be a bit more streamlined.

Anyone who scans your cargo with a comm message at the start of the scan is a pirate (messages like "I see all!" or "What goodies do you have?"). Bounty hunters and police may scan you but they message you *after* the scan to tell you you're clear.

Other than that, anyone with wanted status seems to have maybe 75% chance of being a pirate, I've not noticed any real pattern to it. Wanted fighter craft might be a bit more likely to be pirates than wanted trading craft, or that might be my imagination!

So when I see that I can go ahead and exclude scanning and looking for faction status (maybe just confirm their wanted to be safe) without any concern.
I suppose that takes a step out.
