Pirating Outside Stations.....and other questions

Do any of you guys park outside stations and cargo scan player ships heading out? Then follow them?

I'm think of doing this... park a high traffic station (with cargo scanner, interdictor, and FSD wake scanner) and then follow the player out and perform piracy. Seems like a fun idea, just wondering if anyone has put it to use yet.

I've already interdicted some people and I must say that's a lot of fun -- especially when you play a "fair" pirate; I just want half your stuff, not all of it, just half! Wouldn't it be smart to save money and just give me half rather than lose it all and be turned to space dust? And not only that, I let them go if they don't have anything worth taking. See... not all pirates are scum, haha.

I also run with a hatch breaker incase they don't comply -- which is so cool I don't have the words to describe.... anyways...

How do you guys do pirating. Pirating NPCs is fun... for a little while, but gets boring fast because its predictable. With players, you never know what they're going to do and there's always the lovely tells "What? Who the heck are you. off, you can't have anything!"

Currently pirating in a viper, but limited cargo room makes it less than ideal. Might go with a cobra for added cargo space.

Give me your pirate ideas and stories!!

Well, I would say that I am surprised I haven't seen any pirates doing this, seems like the obvious way to find juicy cargos.

Well you can try following people but most of the time they will be hyperspacing from stations, not using SC. Most of the trade ships can jump much further than a Viper too. Plus by the time you enter their destination they will be about to jump again, you will never be able to keep up with them across systems

It's a good idea but it's way too obvious to players and npcs hop out at nav beacons making them harder to find afterwards. Plus as a rule cargo ships have higher jump ranges making it less likely you'll be able to follow their fsd wake.

I evade pirates in my type 6 all the time. Want to interdict me? I'll simply submit, go back to full throttle before we drop out of hyperspace, boost away while my FSD cools down, then jump away again. Works perfect for both humans and pirates. Actually got a guy sending me hateful message because I would not stop and just give him my cargo. I typically haul silver and gold too.

That is true, and a charged hyperdrive that aligns during interdiction,
breaks the tethering attempt aswell.
That is a flaw needing some correction,
unless you actually use up more fuel and pull the interdictor through with you, aswell.

Pirating outside stations isn't really doable for the following reasons:

  • If you wait until they've just cleared the no-fire zone they can simple turn around and re-enter it.
  • Police will be all over you.
  • If they re-enter the fire zone and you pursue, a single stray shot will turn the station on you.
  • If you wait until they're far enough away from the no-fire zone (which extends beyond the mass lock radius, I believe) they'll have jumped by then.

Waiting to snag players in supercruise is a better way to force a confrontation, but that's not really successful either, because

  • Players can simply submit, boost away, jump to SC, rinse and repeat as needed with little risk to themselves
  • if they happen to be flying a large, slow ship, they can't outrun you, but their FSD isn't affected by your smaller ship either, so again they can simply submit and jump out 10 seconds later

Yea it's way too easy to escape a cobra or viper in a type 6. That's why if they submit I usually go in guns blazing and shoot the hatch as quick as possible. As long as they don't get a good jump on you it works pretty well. Type 6 players tend to skimp on the shields so your weapons cut through them like paper.

Don't try your tactic against an asp tho, they can actually mass disrupt a type 6.

That's why I never give up my shields for cargo space. I can sustain a mass disruption long enough to jump away with minimal hull damage. I'm considering putting a shield cell thingy on it.

Tell me your location... i trade always and only rare commodities. Ask me and my ASP and i will answer the right way :)

Like your playstyle. This is Elite... love it !

If you are better than me you can keep my stuff. If not, yeah you are dust :)

Before moving to an ASP i used a Type-6 with Class 5-B shields and shield cells (Class 2-A). Works well that way... No cobra,Viper or Eagle was able do down my shields. Only an ASP with good weaponlayout was a danger.

On a related note: is the hatch breaker working reliably now? I seem to remember it was rather erratic when it first became available.

Yea, they work pretty well imo, but then again I'm using a grade A. The cheaper ones are hit or miss but you get what you pay for i guess.

couple of points from a traders perspective...

Be FAST about it. If you take the time to scan my cargo not only are you alerting me to your presence, by the time you finish my drive will be almost fully charged.
Get a wiggle on scanning and following that wake UNLESS you're chasing a type six. Almost everything else is able to jump out as soon as the FSD cooldown expires and most pilots, unless they need to wait around to scoop fuel, will be aligned with their destination ready to mash the button as soon as possible. Stringing jumps as fast as possible in a type six cooks it, so if you're using this tactic they are the ideal target. That doesn't help you when they are so efficient at escaping from interdictions though...
Don't chase the guy hauling rares. He's going to have a long jump range and will certainly be stringing jumps. Either he'll outjump you, outlast you on fuel or simply string the jumps so quickly you can't scan the wakes fast enough to keep up.

That's not even close to the definition of spawn camping. Stations are more likely stores, than spawn points and you're only stalking with the intent to rob, not killing them.
