Pitch/Roll vs Pitch/Yaw flight models.

An odd reason I haven't played some space games is I hate pitch/yaw centric flight models.
It's weird how such a small thing can totally change gameplay but pitch/roll gives things a lovely dogfight feel whereas pitch/yaw feels like floaty space turrets.

I was convinced E D would be going this way and was over the moon when they decided to stick to the original Elite style.
Been excited about Star Citizen, Eve Valkyrie and No Man's Sky too but looking at their trailers they appear to have chosen the pitch/yaw model. I will give it a go as I always do because I love these games but I'm sad there's no love for pitch and roll (the correct flight model ;) )

Just brain dumping here to say I LOVE the Elite flight model and am glad they have stood apart in this regard.

EDIT:
I realise you can and should yaw in E D but it's set up to be have better turn rates with pitch / roll.

Yeah, I really like this flight model as well, especially when you add thrusters and FA off into the equation. I know why people sometimes claim it's 'WW2 dogfighting in space' but it really isn't, there's so much more to it than that.

Not sure what you're on about mate? I use pitch yaw AND roll, I also have a voice attack command to swap roll and yaw between my stick and pedals in an instant.

It flies just like I would expect a Fly by wire ship to behave, especially with flight assist off.

edit - sorry dude :) I though you where under the impression this game was only about pitch and yaw ;) Confused me slightly!

I think this is one of the foundation stones that the original Elite set in the first place. Then in Elite II: Frontier they added the whole Newtonian flight model (flight assist off) and that up'd the level of the simulation part of the game.

It's also possible to set the bindings however you like, so with flight assist on, you can set yourself up for a pitch/yaw model if you want. I personally prefer a pitch/roll/yaw approach with my HOTAS, so have the best of all worlds. This is where the Elite: Dangerous framework is a massive win - the customization has been thought through. It is also a mature model, as elements of it have been tried and tested over 30 years.

Oh yeah me too (yaw on pedals) - Sorry my fault I wasn't totally clear. I'd describe F D as pitch / roll centric in that with the base controls you are rolling to bank. The other 3 big space games upcoming seem to be to pitch / yaw centric and appear to have this faked rolling into a turn mechanic.

I have my right stick set up with pitch, yaw and roll - all three axes. A pitch/roll-centric solution is really more "aero plane-centric", as you need to use pitch to get high G maneuvers. For a space sim I like all three.

Getting used to yawing is really just a matter of giving it time. But - a pitch/roll-centric approach is great if your thing is "aero planes in space".

I would personally prefer it to be based on physics and thruster placement myself, that would really make each ship shape and size feel vastly different :)

Yeah, I enjoy this pitch roll thing quite a bit, however it seems some people feel like it forces people to orbit / fly backwards to have a superior tactic, but I don't feel like that, feels like it has more possibilities, though yes certain tactics are very useful.

I wonder if we'll get inundated with people in these forums complaining about the flight model once the other games are out. You would think there would be some cross pollination between the games?

There have already been many debates as to the relative merits of the flight model we have and others that some players prefer.

At first i was put off by it. Then i bought a x-55 Hotas and after like 10 minutes of flying i couldn't think of any other way anymore.
Yesterday i patched up Star citizen to see how it's progressing and the flight model me off to no end.

I think ED nailed it on this one. Obviously there are no spaceships like these but when playing with oculus rift and x-55 it certainly feels like you are flying one.
The star citizen flight model feels like an egoshooter in space.

Yeah same here. I wonder if you can configure SC though to feel more like E D? Might give that a go.

Perhaps having a HOTAS setup is what swings it in E D's favour as those setups were designed for flight sims.

SC is based on physics computation and where each working thruster is located for how the ships move in space, if you lose a thruster in combat the ship will handle very differently to before. I guess you could scrape your ship against something to break your side thrusters to get your desired behaviour ;)
