Pixelated Planet Surface Issue

Is anyone else having this pixelated/low res planet surface during the planet approach after the last patch? In VR these squared pixelated textures are really huge...

Have to tried re-applying your graphic settings? In a previous update I had a similar issue with surfaces looking awful even though the highest setting was showing in the options. Turned out it was fibbing, so I applied a low preset before slapping it all back up again.

Might be worth a shot.

Yes I did, the first time I launched the game I also had the VR disabled. So I saved the graphics settings and started the game again.

I didn't do any testing on this, so not sure. But I definitely seen it during Chapter 4 beta (for Beyond). That's when it was introduced I believe. I don't think there is a fix or workaround.

It really does look awful when you notice it. Can't unsee either :p

Is it relative to specific type of planets? This is a rocky planet for example.
I remember Ice Planets and HMC didn't have such issue, I need to check those now.

It certainly feels to me that it happens more (or even only) on certain planets.

To be clear: for me it's been this way for ages, but I think it started when I edited my graphicsconfig.xml for better graphics. That includes increasing the terrain / surface load. Made the whole game more pretty, but on some planets I started getting those pixels as well. Small price to pay for me, I guess I upped those settings a bit too much. As a result I think the game actually downgrades certain aspects on approach of a planet surface in order to keep FPS at a reasonable level. That's just pure speculation on my part though. 🤷‍♂️
For what it's worth, I haven't noticed it being worse after this patch.

These sort of LOD issues have been around since 2.1 or 2.2 when they emphasized textures over geometry for surface detail.

Happens even with plenty of VRAM and usually abates after a given LOD has been fully loaded.

Seen it before on pc over years, no rhyme or reason it seems to me. Never really bothered me but I think it was quite rare, I just assumed LOD on approach wasn't adjusting correctly.

edit - I think I've only seen it on rocky worlds, but I could be wrong?

Sorry to dig this old post up!!. Ive noticed this pixelated effect on planets over the past couple of weeks. Was there ever a fix for it or is it still an issue?

I get this often, so much so I've often been confused at people saying how good the planets look.

Always looked a bit... Meh to me.

(My pc is no slow poke either)

Yeah, I've been experiencing these awful textures for a few years, even on a high end graphics card; really spoils immersion.
I will try the change to low Res then back fix, or, if it still persists afterwards the nuclear reinstall.

Increasing texture resolutions and playing with the WorkPerFrame settings can help things, sometimes a lot, but there will always be some degree of blockiness during LOD transitions.

I really hope they revert back to the original terrain generation method we had in 2.0:

A reinstall won't do anything more than validating the game files will. If it's a terrain timing or shader cache issue you can delete the GPUWorkTable.xml file in the main game directory and also purge your GPU driver's shader cache; they will be rebuilt next time you run the game.
