placeable turrets

Was just thinking a lil idea of small turrets that you could carry around in your cargo hold and drop out your hatch to defend your position. Don't know if anyone else has requested this.

"Oh my gosh that would be so unbalanced! you're giving large ships more turrets to kill small ships!"

well not really. make it so the turrets can't move themselves meaning you'll have to fly, drop it, and not accidentally bump it sending it flying away
Make em have no shields and can be shot down by point defense and ecm scramble them
And a limited firing range of 1-2km.

making it easy to avoid and easy to destroy in pvp situations.

BUT!

For someone like a miner they could deploy 2 turrets and then mine an asteroid with confidence that they won't be jumped so easily by npc pirates

sizes could come in 4, 6 and 8
(so no sidewinder swarms creating impenetrable turret walls)
size 4 allows 1 turret.
6 allows 2 turrets.
8 allows 4 turrets.

classes E to A increase the time the turret stays alive and how accurately it shoots with E rated only lasting 2 minutes and incapable of accurately hitting anything smaller than a vulture

Balancing is easy.

Make them throw away items. So you can't scoop/recall them.
Make them require an internal module slot. Like an SLF.

You can either set them to fire at will. Which will shoot any target, or attack my target.
And you can order them to move to you and stop, but they're very slow. 150m/s.
Can't fire while moving.

You can have 3 variants.
Strong hull, weak weapon
Average hull, average weapon.
Weak hull, strong weapon.

I think letting them move would make them overpowered....

also on variants maybe also a variant that only targets missiles like a point defense?

I don't think letting them move would make then OP.
They can't shoot while moving.

But it allows miners to have them follow them to the next asteroid.
 
I thought I wasn't going to like this when it had been introduced in another game I routinely play. While I don't use it often there when I do use, there's usually a good reason why I had to.

I can't see this not being a one-shot implementation even in this game. While I'm not sure that it should follow the player to another asteroid, I can see a new one being deployed if the requirements for buying them/making them aren't as outrageous as the heat sinks/other sundries the AFMU can now construct.
 
This is just one of those things...but should miners be immune to pirates? And was this not in part exactly what SLFs were for?

I mean at present you can already equip your ship with turrets/SLFs and let them open fire if you want to hassle them, but to actually shake a pirate off these deployable turrets would need to be capable of destroying ships by themselves - and that's not going to happen.

Nice idea. Just can't see any application for them outside of being novelty mines for combat.

If anything Skimmers should be deployable from your ship. You need to have a controller in you ship for them. Not really OP'd but enough to harass a pirate for you to escape.
