Placing picnic benches on grass. ( Cant do it) Why?

I am a brand new player and I thought I would start off the game with a nice picnic area.

I painted some grass and then went to place a picnic bench on the grass.

The game would not allow me to do this. I could only place it on a path. This makes no sense to me at all. Why would I put a picnic bench on a path? People like to eat on the grass when at a park or picnic area.

I noticed I could place a building on the same grassy area that I could not put a picnic bench so it's not like it wont allow anything to be placed there. This is a frustrating way to start this game. Did I miss something or will I be forced to make a different type of ground to put a picnic bench? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

picnic benches have to be tied to a path so that guests can access them. Some tips to achieve what you want. make a small plaza type path area using the path grid system. place your benches...then use the billboards to cover the plaza area where the benches are...using a grassy photo on the billboard to give the illusion the benches are on grass.

Couldn't you also just make a plaza with the natural paths and lay down a grass texture under it?

1. make a plaza, place the benches, remove the path. The bench stays (but won't be used)

2. make a plaza with the nature-like path where you can edit the terrain with the terrain editor.

like they said use natural path (the ground color conforms to the color already on the ground) then turn the curbs off
