Plague Ship?

I've seen a few systems that say that if you go too close to certain planets in the system, or enter the planet's atmosphere, you'll be designated a plague ship. Is that actually a mechanic in the game, or is it just flavor/filler? Since I've seen videos of people landing on planets before (took a long time, was pretty buggy looking) I'd guess it'd be possible to get close enough you'd be considered "in the atmosphere".

Does anything actually happen when you do this?

Never heard of that, interesting.

Possibly quarantined from getting docking permission from certain stations perhaps ?

Or, worse, shot on sight ?

Yes, get a sidey and test it out.

The in game description says ALL factions will be hostile. I'd be willing to bet it's in, but haven't been able to test.

Goodness me, imagine the grind to recover rep with all factions if that's actually implemented the way it reads.

Could be a wording issue where they're hostile as in shoot on sight and not hostile as in reputation. At least... I would hope... ok, you scared me enough with that thought to never think about testing this.

Permit Required for this one.

If the systems can be entered I bet they're incredibly lucrative.... High risk, high reward...

How do you plan to claim any reward if all stations shoot on sight? It's not like you could pick up super cheap cargo and sell it somewhere if you can't dock anywhere to sell it. Same goes for exploration. If you can't dock you can't sell anything you could possibly pick up. It's not like you need to smuggle yourself in, your docking requests will be denied, hence trespassing and shot (again) if you try to force the issue. Best to avoid.

You have to get very close to the earth like world in order to be affected. Just stay away from it and you will be okay.

I've been close enough to Peregrina to buy the system data.

The system only contains 2 small outposts, several planets, and the moon that contains the plague. I suspect they sell a bunch of rares, that's it.

The station that gives you the permit is faaar away from the sun, and they don't give many missions each time, so you'll have to do a lot of trips.

Scary. Wonder what happens if you contaminate your ship and next sneak into a Sol system station. Probably pretty messy there about 28 days later.
Note to myself, try to destroy the Federation that way later.

But has anyone tried it? I've seen videos of people inside the system because they were looking for the rares goods the description hits at, but nobody has flown into the "plague" to see if it's actually in the game. If I had the permit to the system I'd go try it right now, but I'm not going to tank the time in supersnooze it'd take to get the permit.

Judging by how little complexity there is to be found in the rest of the game universe I'd eat my shoe if there was anything special to that system that even resembles anything close to that screenshot.

I just got the permit but I really don't know if I should try crashing into the moon.

I'm allied with both the Federation and the Empire and it would be a B* to lose it all.

Just tried it

Nothing happens :-(
Flew into the atmosphere, flew around a bit, nothing happened. (Last time I flew into a planet's atmosphere, months ago, a security ship flew up and scanned me.)
Went to another system, but have no status changes at all.
