I've had a few old HDDs fail recently. I used to take a hammer to them, fill them with something flammable & generally destroy them (it's cathartic) but I took one apart to show my son what they look like inside & we took the platters out, 'wiped' them with the neodymium magnets (also inside) & threw the rest away.

Anyhoo, old HDD platters make good coasters.
