Planet Exploration and Geological Signals

So I am over 1,000 light years from the bubble doing a little exploring and after I use the DSS to map the surface I am informed there are 2 Geological signals and 'fuminoles' on the surface. Once upon a time these signals would be displayed on the planet and the Nav map but now all I am seeing in Distress Signals and Wreckage. So how do I find these Geological sights of interest (because I actually want to see them) without flying over the entire planet using my Mk 1 eyeball?

And if they have been removed who decided that would be a good idea; the tea lady? Because it wouldn't be anyone who actually plays the game.

Also why are all the uninhabited systems and some inhabited in the 'bubble' now 'undiscovered' and why would they pay money for system information that thousands of traders have been through? It doesn't make sense.

1) So yes, use the heatmap and geological knowledge to find the volcanics, they are wide spread now and not in a couple of spots, if you see 3 geology it means 3 types not 3 locations, they can be everywhere and anywhere in the blue map, use the filters to cycle through types of bio and geo.

2) They are undiscovered by YOU! But if the bodies say undiscovered and are visible on the system map they have been visited and discovered previously by other players. Systems that have never been visited by anyone won't show undiscovered, they will show nothing in the system map and nav panel until you find them all with the FSS.

As far as why, you do know that everything is moving in space, and collisions between asteroids and miners pushing rocks around can send them on unexpected paths, so all knowledge is valuable. Well technically they can't in the ED universe, but that's the background explanation for always needing the data updated, basically in a real universe things change unexpectedly, new things like probes arrive and stations get built, stuff gets destroyed, stuff changes orbit due to various events, you get payed for keeping the galaxy safe for eveyone.

Many thanks varonica. The geological features make a lot more sense now. Personally I don't agree with all the 'undiscovered' systems in the bubble mainly because it isn't really necessay to actually explore to gain explorer rank. I made 'Pathfinder' without even leaving the bubble.

Also if constantly moving objects is the reason for paying for cartographic data then after a period of time I should be able to scan and resubmit them for more cash and Exporer rank :sneaky:. All good though. Thanks for the explanation. I've made triple Elite twice before and I'm just getting back into the game.

It's always been a fact that players can actually reach elite in exploration without leaving the bubble, my personal opinion is that exploration rewards should be based on how many people have visited a system, so first visitor gets full reward, if you are second you get half that, 3rd it halves again and etc, that way getting to elite in the bubble would be impossible, but you could still get a decent payout just on the edges where a lot of people haven't been and explorers in the far black would get the big rewards from exploration.

Of course it's a bit late for that now, not that exo pays so large most of my short runs get 20m or 30m exploration reward and 400m+ exo reward, so exploration has really changed a lot since they increased the exo rewards.

It may have been theoretically possible to get Elite without leaving the bubble but in practice I would think no one would have been able to do it pre the upgraded explorer payouts. I did a Sag A run pre Horizons and returned via a convaluted circular route that netted me several, first found ELWs and an lot of first found Water Worlds and I needed a second extensive exploration run to get Elite in Exploration. On that note, while I like the FSS, it has taken away some of the excitement of flying to discover an ELW and seeing that blue marble growing on your screen. I still have screen shots of my first.

I like your idea of reduced payments but as you said ... it is too late now.

Fly safe Commander.

What bugs me are the systems where a cursory look shows a couple of planets tagged as 'discovered by' but a confirmatory honk reveals that there are a a few more - in a number of cases 30 or 40 more! Who does such a half-arsed survey? It's particularly galling when (as I am) you're a bit OCD and find it difficult to move on without finishing the job.

🍻

One thing to remember (not the only one, but one of the important ones):
FSS became a thing late 2018, much of well travelled space was explored by previous system, which required you to fly towards bodies (the smaller, the closer) for them to be tagged as discovered.

It always surprises me how close to the Bubble you can find completely undiscovered systems. Found one today 1500ly from Sol, And banked a quarter of a billion in genetic data from it.
